Guest guest
Willow, the adrenal issue is indirectly related to the asthma as it has been caused by taking the prednisone long term. , my step down symptoms I am currently having are adrenal symptoms. In addition to fatigue I will have sweats, shaking, nausea/vomiting and bone pain. I can deal with everything but the pain. I won't bump back up for the sweats and stuff, but when the bones start hurting...... I laugh at the patience part. I am constantly griping to my docs about the stepdown. I even asked one doc if there was just some way to admit me for a week or so and go cold turkey (like quitting cocaine or something). I figured even having to do dialysis temporarily would be worth it to just be able to be rid of this. Please badger away. We can learn from each other. Guest guest
I understand what you are feeling. I have never been on prednisone for a long period of time like you though. But even a week has been too much for me. I once was only given prednisone for 3 days, that was in the beginning with my asthma, and I didn't know about step downs, and it was hair raising. I was giddy all of the time, and acted like I was on a goofy drug or something. It was not pretty. I had an appointment with a new obgyn at that time. My sister drove me, and to this day I think, he that Dr. thinks I am not normal, even though it has never happened again. All I remember about that appointment is laughing a lot. When I left there, in the car as I was riding home with my sister, we laughed and laughed, of course, I was still giddy, but, I was so embarassed, but my sister thought it was funny as heck. I am still embarassed every time I go to that Dr.'s office. Mercifully I have another Dr. in that office. It is a she and I explained it to her, and she just laughed, and said well we are sometimes weird too, so I understand, made me feel a lot better. I wouldn't go cold turkey, not in a million years unless I didn't have any other choice. Just a little story here. willothewispl. To: asthma Sent: Mon, April 18, 2011 11:56:47 AMSubject: Re: Re: Steroid step down. Guest guest
Hi Madeline and Willow,Madeline I know what you mean about those symptoms, they can be tough to deal with luckily I haven't had much Of the vomiting only before starting the steroids and I didn't really understand what was going on then. I have had a better time of it this winter. Can get really fatigued when I step down with the shakes, sweating and only occassionally the achey bones. I hope I have a better summer but the heat and humidity are the worst for both the asthma and AI. Oh,just a side bar but I was falsely dx with fibromyalgia when i first started with frequent pred use. I finally figured out, many years later, I was having withdrawal symptoms even though I always followed my taper instructions. I was having fatigue and awful joint pain even after the taper packs.(forgot what they are called but you take 30mg first day 6 pills then 5 and so on) About two years ago I was on prednisone for a year and I really think that is when my adrenals decided to take a nap. I was dx with obstructive sleep apnea about that time and never really got used to the bipap and my pulmonary doctor wants me to try it again. I figure its worth a try just to tangle out the fatigue caused by AI vs OSA. The verdict is still out on that one. My husband is having a hard time understanding the sleep apnea and need for treatment. But Im starting to ramble on. Willow I can relate totally you never know how your going to react to prednisone from happy and giddy to screaming and miserable its potent stuff. I have lots of stories that my kids and I look back on and laugh about. When Im on higher doses of pred for longer periods I tend to become a blather mouth, no filtering, spill the beans on everyone. But when they get upset I just blame it on the prednisone! Thanks for listening! To: asthma Sent: Mon, April 18, 2011 1:34:03 PMSubject: Re: Re: Steroid step down. I understand what you are feeling. Guest guest
,Are you having issues with your skin or hair? My hair feels like someone took the cornstraw off a broom and glued it to the top of my head. It is also thinning out. I have finally found a conditioner that is helping with that, but I haven't found anything that seems to help with my skin. The skin has gotten so thin and dry. The straie (sp?) will crack and bleed from time to time. Just wondering if you have had the same problems.MadelineTo: asthma Sent: Tue, April 19, 2011 10:15:31 AMSubject: Re: Re: Steroid step down. Guest guest
Well, that was interesting, LOL. You know I never thought about vomiting, but, I have had fatigue, and achey bones and all sorts of other things. But, I have so many other things I deal with that I never really notice new symptoms unless they are different that what I usually have for one of my maladies. That's ok, will listen anytime, I appreciate someone listening to me also. Sometimes this is the only place that anyone understands what we go through. To: asthma Sent: Tue, April 19, 2011 10:15:31 AMSubject: Re: Re: Steroid step down. Guest guest
So far my hair seems to be ok, but, I have a heck of a time with my skin. I have to lotion up each time I take a bath, and if I remember, in between for my feet, elbows and hands. But, I have all kinds of allergies that cause my skin to have a rash, I am allergic to so many foods, as well as things in our life, from day to day. I am wondering if I have Sjodren's syndrome. I just read about it the other day. I need to ask my Dr. what he thinks. I don't need any more health problems to deal with. But, what can you do? I started using vaseline intensive care lotion in the big pump bottle, it works wonders for my skin, and isn't that expensive. Some times I use the one with Aloe in it, and what a difference. I have prescription lotion from my DR. for other food rashes, because they are very hard to take care of , and very painful. I was thinking for your hair, maybe once in a while put some baby, or olive oil on your hair, and then covering it with one of those shower caps, and leave it on for a while, and let it soften your hair and scalp and see if that helps. I have heard o some people doing that. I have tried the baby oil, but, didn't really need it so didn't do it again. Just some ideas. willothewispl@....From: Dempsey To: "asthma " <asthma >Sent: Wed, April 20, 2011 11:18:10 PMSubject: Re: Re: Steroid step down. Hi Madeline,Yes on both. Guest guest
It might take a few times to show real improvement. You could maybe talk to a beautician and see if she can help you deal with things. Some times they have good ideas. Otherwise look some treatments up on the internet, or go to a skin Dr., and see if they can help with your hair and scalp. Just some ideas. I need to go back to my skin DR. haven't done that In quite a while, need to go back and see what he says now. From: Dempsey To: "asthma " <asthma >Sent: Wed, April 20, 2011 11:18:10 PMSubject: Re: Re: Steroid step down. Seven stitches Got infected then allergic reaction to the Antibiotics .I'm really bad about using moisturizerBut I need to make it part of my daily routine.I was prescribed Fosomax by my endocrinologist I was worried about side affects got a secondOpinion and I haven't been taking it. Were youPrescribed anything to prevent osteoporosis ?Sent from my iPod ,Are you having issues with your skin or hair? My hair feels like someone took the cornstraw off a broom and glued it to the top of my head. It is also thinning out. Guest guest
I know taking prednisone can be frustrating, it can cause so many side effects. But you really have to be careful about stopping prednisone cold turkey. You could end up with adrenal insufficiency and then you will be dependent on corticosteriods its a very serious situation, it can be life threatening if not dx in time! i have adrenal insufficiency which is believed to be caused from prolonged use of steriods even though I did taper the way I was supposed to. If Its a week or less its not as dangerous but still you never know better safe than sorry. To: "asthma " <asthma >Sent: Thu, April 21, 2011 7:09:18 PMSubject: Re: Re: Steroid step down. Guest guest
,All good advice. Here is my experience. I have tried mayonnaise, vinegar rinses, olive oil, and all kinds of conditioners (including leave ins and very expensive ones). As I said earlier, I have finally found something that works on my hair. Believe it or not it is one of the cheapest conditioners you can by. Suave Professionals line. It is the almond and shea butter (in a green bottle). I was absolutely shocked. My hair feels like hair again. As far as the lotions go, try the Vaseline. My husband has psoriasis, and he loves it for daily use. However, it does not do it for me at all. My stretch marks still crack and bleed. I have tried about every over the counter (even greasy ones like Eucerin) to no avail. I thought maybe someone had a home remedy of some sort. In the past week I have been experimenting with making my own bath bombs. I am playing with the different oils and have found a recipe that seems to work well (although it does not fizz). The nut oil tends to smell a bit funky though. I like the feel but not the smell. I will let you know when I find one that feels good and smells good (not rancid or irritating). I have found the dishwasher to be an extreme hazard myself. It seems to be at the perfect height to cause a lot of damage. I have had to learn to shut the door before moving from one side to the other as my skin wants to gash open at the smallest brush on the corner of the darned thing.Willow,This group has been my lifeline. In the beginning the only good advice came from this group, and since then, it helps me stay sane. It is invaluable to have a place we can discuss, rant and rave, or even just whine and be understood. Kay,I am soooooo glad to hear from you. I do not like it when you go off the grid. Yep the steroids are the most likely culprit for your skin and hair issues. They affect every system in the body. Try the Suave conditioner I mentioned above. I don't know if it will work with your hair type, but it is cheap and worth a try.Hugs to all. Breathe easy!Madeline
Guest guest
My mom has really dry skin and tear ducts as a result of sjogrens, lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. I turned her onto Bath and Body Works True Blue Spa, Lay it on Thick cream. Its the only stuff thats actually moisturized her skin lately. It runs about 20.00/tube but it really works good. I use the foot version of it for my eczema...its the only stuff that actually moisturizes my feet. Heres a link... http://www.bathandbodyworks.com/product/index.jsp?productId=11161004 & cp=4090261.4090358.4376993The only other really good lotion I can think of is one that the local hospitals use. Its sold under the Medline name...they have a whole line of skin care products mainly aimed at wound care, but dry skin does increase someones risk of infection and ulcers. We all got a trial bottle when these ppl did a wound care seminar for us and I got the moisturizing lotion...it works pretty good too. I dont know how to actually order the stuff...you will probably have to call and find out cost...but its decent lotion. Im posting a link to their pdf file that shows before/after pics of their wound care stuff at work. Be forewarned, some of it might be a bit graphic...although the pdf file is a bit tamer than the books they gave us. Remedy is the moisturizing lotion btw. https://www.medline.com/irj/go/km/docs/publicdocuments/Medline%20Documents/Marketing%20Materials/MarketingDocuments_N-Z/Remedy%20Brochure%20MKT210202_LIT337.pdfAnn-----Original Message-----To: asthma <asthma >Sent: Thursday, April 21, 2011 at 5:05 pmSubject: Re: Re: Steroid step down. Just some ideas. willothewispl@....From: Dempsey To: "asthma " <asthma@ yahoogroups.com>Sent: Wed, April 20, 2011 11:18:10 PMSubject: Re: Re: Steroid step down. Hi Madeline,Yes on both. Guest guest
Oh, I forgot all about the Suave products, they are good products. I use that Pantene creme rinse, seems to help me. I use cheaper shampoo, will go back to Suave now that you mention the products, but, the Pantene is good creme rinse, also some hair restorative products help, I have been trying the Pantene restorative also. So far pretty good. And they seem to last a long time. Just another idea. From: A Hill To: asthma Sent: Fri, April 22, 2011 5:23:00 AMSubject: Re: Re: Steroid step down. Do you have Lush in America? Guest guest
Thanks for the info, I will give it a try.To: asthma Sent: Thu, April 21, 2011 10:28:41 PMSubject: Re: Re: Steroid step down. Just some ideas. willothewispl@....From: Dempsey To: "asthma " <asthma@ yahoogroups.com>Sent: Wed, April 20, 2011 11:18:10 PMSubject: Re: Re: Steroid step down. Hi Madeline,Yes on both. I had jeans on and whenI pulled them up there was a three inch byThree inch v shaped skin tear.
