Guest guest
Sounds to me like you need to see an allergy doc and be tested. None of the over the counter medicines help me much either. I used to take Drixoral but you can no longer buy it in America. Re: Allergy Control First of all sorry I don't have time to post much. I have 2 jobs and 8 year old twins. I really need some advice from you guys. What do you do to control your allergies? I have been diagnosed with allergies to dustmites, cats, grass. My allergies are constant 24 hours a day my throat swells. The asthma meds combivent and pulmicort, allegra or claritin don't really help that much. I could use my xopenex neb, ventolin inhaler nothing works very well. The only thing I found to keep my throat from swelling is sudafed. I clean my house completely washed all of the walls, floors, furniture, after I got rid of the cat. I turned the humidity down so dustmites can't survive. I covered my mattresses and pillows with allergy covers. I was all my bedding including my mattress pad (it is over the allergy cover), sheets, pillows and blankets. I had my vents cleaned. I have the best furnance filter I can buy. To no avail, I still have my throat swell 24/7. Sometimes when I eat I have an attack where my throat closes and it brings on asthma, face and chest turns red, I belch and throw up. But I can't pin point what it is. It is usually when I go out to eat. Have I missed something? What else can I do? Is there special meds? Thanks, Lynne
Guest guest
It sounds like you have the indoor allergies controlled about as well as you can. The only other suggestion I can think of for the house, is to remove as much carpet as possible (if you can) and go to hardwood/linoleum or tile floors. The carpet might still have dander trapped underneath.Grass allergies are more likely related to the pollen that grass releases. With spring coming around grass pollen counts are rising. Pollen is at its highest early in the morning and in the evening hours...so if you open your windows at night you might want to rethink that idea. Wearing a mask outside might help...You quite possibly have other allergies that arent discovered yet. There are many food allergies linked to tree pollen allergies...heres a list of common ones that I got from http://www.fitsugar.com/Got-Allergies-Foods-Might-Set-You-Off-1624651 Id guess that if you have not been tested for tree pollen allergies, you might want to get tested. In the meantime, Id stick with what works for you med wise and also keep a food diary of EVERYTHING you eat and when you notice symptoms, what symptoms you experience and what relieved them. Definitely ask your doc for an epi pen and keep that with you at all times if your throat is swelling when you eat in case you have a severe anaphylactic reaction. Show your twins and family how to use it where it is in case you cannot...8 yr olds are capable of knowing what to do. My sister in law has tree pollen allergies and experiences cross over reactions to apples, raw carrots, onions, peaches & pears...Good luck in the meantime..AnnType of AllergyFoods That May Cause Cross ReactionsBirch Tree pollenAlmonds, apples, apricots, carrots, celery, cherries, coriander, fennel, hazelnuts, kiwi, lychee fruit, nectarines, parsley, parsnips, peaches, pears, peppers, persimmon, plums, potatoes, prunes, soy, wheat, zucchini, walnutsGrass pollenCelery, watermelon, oranges, peaches, tomatoesRagweed pollenBananas, melons (watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew), gourd family (cucumber, zucchini and squash), chamomile, echinacea, sunflower seedsAlder pollenCelery, pears, apples, almonds, cherries, hazelnuts, peaches, parsleyMugwort pollenCelery, fennel, carrots, parsley, coriander, sunflower, peppersFit's Tips: Just because you have an allergy to one of the pollens listed above, does not mean you automatically have OAS. If you've been noticing swelling, itching or tingling in your mouth or throat, it's best to get tested by an allergist.
Guest guest
So I didn't see any mention of clearing out chemicals. It's time to get rid of all of the chemical household cleaners, laundry detergent, dryer sheets, shampoo, conditioner, scented candles, perfumes, etc. even scented make-up. You can replace all of this stuff with scent-free, natural stuff from the health food store. I make my own cleaners, which is really easy and you can google recipes. My homemade stuff works great too! And another biggie is your diet. You definitely have food allergies because 1) your allergies are uncontrolled even though you take medications and have a relatively " allergy-free " home and 2) your throat sometimes swells up when you eat. How much time are you spending outside? My husband can't go outside *at all* during the spring and early summer months. He goes to his car and back in a building, and that's it. Do you have a good air purifier? I highly recommend a book called Is This Your Child's World by Rapp. Yes, it is written to parents, but it is the most informative book out there when it comes to figuring out what your body is reacting to. (food, chemical, or otherwise) And I also feel strongly that every parent should read it! hth, Marla First of all sorry I don't have time to post much. I have 2 jobs and 8 year old twins. Guest guest
Lynne,My husband and daughter both have severe spring/fall allergies. Up until two years ago, my daughter was on heavy meds for her allergies and then still not completely under control. We started a regimen of 2 tbsp local honey mixed with 1 tbsp unpasturized apple cider vinegar. It took about 5 weeks for me to see any noticable difference. This spring, she has had to take an over the counter Alavert twice. No scripts at all. The honey has to be local for it to work though (produced within 20 miles of your home).MadelineTo: asthma Sent: Tue, April 5, 2011 8:28:24 PMSubject: Re: Allergy Control First of all sorry I don't have time to post much. Guest guest
You know I have that too...I seem to have an issue with the part you press down to spray it though b/c it seems to get "stuck". It does work good when I get the spritz to work. I need to work on that.Ann Re: Allergy Control I forgot to mention that I also use NasalCrom, which is a cromolyn sodium spritz that helps to prevent the whole histamine response from inhaled allergens. It takes several weeks to build it up so you aren't reacting to every pollen that comes along. I use it after the NeilMed sinus rinse at least twice a day, depending on the time of year. Controlling allergies often reduces the asthma flares for me. JoAnn
