Guest guest
Shirley: My husband had this problem. They don't swallow the food completely. It is called packing, as it stays in the throat area. You could see a bulge in my husband's throat area where apparently the food was lodged. They aspirate very easily that way, as the food doesn't go up or down correctly. The swallowing test will show whether he is swallowing like he should. Good luck. Guest guest
I've also heard alternating a bite of regular food w/ a bite of cold ice cream would trigger swallowing. Does that make sense? Provide something cold with the meal and alternating. The difference in texture and/or cold vs. hot triggers the swallowing to happen. Guest guest
Shirley, my Mom was taken to the hospital the last week in December because she chocked on something aspirated and couldn't breathe properly. They gave her a swallowing test (water, apple sauce right at the hospital bed and said she was unable to swallow). She now has a feeding tube. That was over two months ago. Though my Mom is at the end stage of the disease, I think she may be able to eat some soft things now. I'm waiting to move her to my home to try it. It is not unusual for someone at the end stages of this disease to aspirate and not be able to swallow. I hope your husband has just a mild case of pneumonia and that the swallowing test will shed some light. The next decision isn't easy. Though I know my Mom would not like to have had a feeding tube, her spirit was so alive and it felt like the right thing at the time. I hope this helps you a little. Guest guest
yes they did a swallowing test and they said today that they are going to have to put a tube in his nose but they can only do that for 2 weeks then it will have to be put into his stomach unless he has a living will saying not to. He doesn't but I really think he will give up He looked at me and asked after the dr. left and said well I only have 2 weeks left right and I told him that was not what the dr. said he said he could put the tube in his nose for 2 weeks and then it would have to go into his stomach but he has already given up on trying to walk and get around and I really think he will give up on himself before this is over. I hope not but I don't have much faith that he will let them go into his stomach. But I will just put it in Gods hands now and leave it up to him. lThanks to all the thoughts and prayers that this group has given me in the short time I've been a member you have been the place I come to for help. Guest guest
Shirley, I am very sorry. At least if your husband is aware and capable enough to make decisions regarding his needing a feeding tube it takes the onus off you. However, it does not make this crisis easy. , Oakville Ont. Guest guest
Shirley, I'm sorry to hear that Charlie will need a feeding peg. Perhaps he is depressed today about not being able to eat on his own anymore, yet another loss, and he will feel differently in two weeks time. Sending you both strength, Courage Re: my husband charlie Shirley, my Mom was taken to the hospital the last week in December because she chocked on something aspirated and couldn't breathe properly. Guest guest
Hello Shirley, I have been in your situation. Six years ago, my Mom had aspirated pnuemonia. The doctors told us she was dying and to take her home and call in Hospice. She was only 73 years old. My brother, who had medical Power of Atoorney, insisted that a feeding tube be inserted. She was admitted to a Nursing Home in very grave condition and we were told she would die. Three months later, after physical therapy and some wonderful care, the feeding tube was removed and she moved back to the Group Home, where she had some pretty good quality of life. Sadly, she has now moved on to the next level and had to go back to the Nursing Home last summer. Best Wishes. Elaine from Michigan

Guest guest
thanks donna they are going to put a tube in charlies throat tomorrow because he's on plavix and they can't put one in his stomach until the end of next week and he hasn't eaten since last sunday but i'm so worried he will pull it out and cause some damage to himself. but the decision has been his on both counts so i've handed it over to God to take care of. Jus keep us in your prayers.
