i have been trying to figure out why my using VCO every day seems to have made

my skin dry and now having cellulite 2!? and since 2 other people have noted

that VCO made their skin dry/er too!

* reading some interesting things ;but confusing too.

so VCO is *not* an EFA (Essential Fatty Acid)??

do you know if you are low in EFAs?

I don't think I've ever had my EFA's tested. Should double check my labs though...

Hi Carol,

Coconut Oil (Unrefined, Hexane-Free, Extra-Virgin) is VERY, very stable, and is

a magical SatFat with medium-chain fatty acids (MCFA), also known as

medium-chain triglycerides (MCT). The size of the fatty acid is extremely

important because our bodies respond to and metabolize each fatty acid

differently depending on its size.

It would proabably be wise to supplement and eat foods high in EFAs to build

them up in your body. Coconut oil improves utilization of essential fatty acids

and protects them from oxidation.

The EFAs deficiency is likely a contributing problem. Poor digestion of fats can

cause a deficiency in EFAs. EFA's take lubrication and moisture to the skin,

preventing dryness; joints, preventing inflammation; and cardiovascular system,

preventing heart disease. EFA's bind oxygen to hemoglobin increasing oxygenation

and circulation which definitely decreases coldness in the hands and feet.

BTW, I am not sure what to make of an unclear 18 year-old study, I found this

2006 study that concludes, *MCTs seem to enhance EFA*.

http://www.jlr.org/content/47/2/404.full

This brings us back to the fact the we MUST balance ALL deficiencies or

excesses.

Good luck,

~Bj

i don't think its a coincidence that 3 adult women on a thryoid/autoimmune

website are getting worsened skin /drier skin

after using VCO.

it is certainly not something to ignore imo and i guess my main focus has to

back to improving my EFAs and including getting back to eating green leafy

vegetables :) as well as fish oil capsules.

Hi Carol,

Yes, I'd focus on a EFA deficiency, too. We can only get EFAs from the foods and

supplements we consume. Eating convenience and highly processed food not to

mention all the junk food in American diets prevents EFAs from forming and doing

their jobs in our bodies. Many people also do NOT understand that good fats are

essential to maintaining good health.

EFAs deficiency is associated with the drying of the skin all over the body

along with of the eyes, mouth, scalp, nasal cavity, vaginal cavity and nails;

reoccurring physical exhaustion or lack of physical energy; existence of

forgetfulness and impaired mental clarity; the presence of aching and painful

joints and the onset of arthritis; the sudden appearance of angina and related

complications like chest pains; getting frequent colds and general sickness;

having high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease; progressing indigestion

and related digestive problems like abdominal gas and bloating.

I really think supplementing and eating EFA rich foods is as important to my

health and well-being as taking my Efra thyroid every day. Supplementing with

EFA and eating EFA rich foods helped me even when I still had undetected gluten,

soy and dairy intolerances. Now and for the last four years since I changed my

diet VCO seems to just enhance my EFAs and my overall health.

This Essetial Fatty Acids article has some really good info. I didn't realize

that 80% of American are deficient in EFAs. I like the easy to understand info

on the biochemical synthesis of EFAs. Note that -One important function is

their ability to direct the secretion of endocrine hormones to their target

cells. AND a WHOLE lot MORE... MORE than I thought possible.

Have a good week-end.

Is there a good EFA product you can recommend? And will digestive enzymes/HCL help with its absorption?

people take good fish oil caps to get EFAs but make sure the brand you choose

are Good quality ; NOrdic Naturals is apparently one of the best OTC.

i got 1 brand via an alternative Dr i had; a line of supplements that only sells

to doctors , you know that drill :0. very spendy.

~*

my problem isn't that i haven't been taking FIsh oils since i found the

internet-forums and Armour :) and i also have NOT been eating 'bad' oils either.

my problem is:

Why do i suddenly have Low EFAs when i didn't have this problem for the 1st 35

years i was hypothyroid on Sinthroid??

there is something else going on with me =and may be related to why COconut oil

is drying ME out ...and others.. but not Everyone.

??

and Robyn

do you drink coffee/ caffeines?

and do you eat a green salad (leafy veggies) most days of each week?

thanks

-Carol

(1 thing i know is that i stopped eating my ususal salads this year

and probably am drinking more coffee than my old-average) eg +1 cup
