You may want to consider:1. giving an enema or bisacodyl suppository to clear out large amounts of retained stool.2. consult a DAN or functional medicine doctor or integrated medicine doctor in your area3. consider Soiling Solutions bowel retraining program www.soilingsolutions.com--- Subject: Getting nervous - it's not workingTo: miralax Date: Saturday, April 18, 2009, 11:03 AM

Ok, still fairly new here. I stopped giving my 7 year old daughter who has CP Miralax at least 2-3 weeks ago. Since then, I've tried Natural Calm Magnesium, which does not seem to be working; MOM when needed; Pedia-Lax when needed (last night had to help her pull it out!); Fruit-Eze for 4 days now; and a good probiotic (just started a new one HMF Neuro). What can I try next? I'm getting frustrated. She screamed like crazy last night while trying to go. I actually broke down almost a week ago and gave her some Miralax for 2 days. Then she really had a meltdown and started screaming!

I want to add fish oil, but she has so many allergies. All fish seem to cause hives or welts. She is allergic to olive and the EFA I found at Whole Foods has Olive Oil in it!

I found a Krill oil on Mercola last night. I'm not sure if she would react to it or not. Has anyone else used this? I also saw the constipation topic on Mercola a few days back and noticed Hypothyroidism could cause constiption. I need to re-visit that to see what he recommends. With all of her allergic reactions, it is making it difficult to try some of the alternatives. Help!

Our son also has CP(over all diagnoses). We have good luck with aloe vera juice. As far as reactions to Olive leaf etc. what reaction symptoms are you referring to? Sometimes a good thing can manifest as a reaction in the beginning, this is it doing its job. Fish oil reactions, consider flax oils instead(plant based omega's). Jennie<><

She tested positive to olive on a 3 day patch test with the allergy doc two

weeks ago. I'll try flax again. My daughter has suspected eosinophillic

disorder too, which makes it hard!

Hi and our other new members!

Hang in there - most of us here know how frustrating and tiring this can be for

both the parents and child. We try so hard and when it seems like nothing is

working it can seem hopeless.

- I noticed you mentioned she has a lot of allergies - which does make

things more complicated for you when it comes to supplements and things. Have

you checked Kirkman Lab for supplements? (http://www.kirkmanlabs.com/) - they

have a lot of info on allergens and very clearly label the ingredients on

products.

I wonder if you have tried removing gluten and casein (and possibly soy) from

her diet? Even if these foods have never shown up on an allergy panel, it is my

belief (and I'm not a medical practitioner -just been at this for a while now!)

that it is still worth a try to eliminate them (and/or possibly other foods).

Thyroid function is something our holistic MD (also a DAN! practitioner) checked

for with my son when we embarked on our quest to determine what was going on

(constipation-wise). She also said hypothyroidism can be related to

constipation.

That MD said that gluten seemed to be a problem for a large number of the

constipated kids she sees in her practice. And, interestingly enough, it seems

that hypothyroidism (and possibly adrenal problems) are rather common in

gluten-intolerant persons.

For my son - we probably spent about a year tweaking different supplements but

it was only we worked out exactly which foods he was most intolerant of and

eliminated them 100% (I mean, 100%!!) that we saw improvements. Even the

slightest slip up caused us set backs that spiraled downward into a withholding

pattern and took weeks (or more) to recover from.

Now, my son (4.5 years old) goes every day (with rare exceptions - which are

usually dietary infraction related). We have reduced his need for supplemental

magnesium. He was getting about 500mg magnesium (plus B6) daily, and now, I give

it to him once every few days but am going to get a capsule with less magnesium

for daily use. We take probiotics (we ensure they are casein/milk-free,

soy-free, gluten-free, etc.). We take a vitamin D2/K3 supplement and a zinc

supplement. We're working cod liver oil back in - it seemed to cause him

problems before, but it looks like he's doing better with it now.

Another thing to look into is urine pH. In the beginning of this journey, my

son's urine pH was way out of whack and we helped that with bicarb/salt drink

and bicarb in bath water (start slow with the bicarb in bath water). Check

previous posts about urine (and saliva) pH - I think LeeAnn ( " mommtlc " ) recently

posted some info and there are a few discussions in the archives. Also consider

reading about the vitamin K protocol at the vitamin K group

It may help for you to look over the Beginner's file

http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/miralax/files/Beginner%27s%20File/ if you

haven't seen it yet.

HTH!

O sorry to hear that!! A lot of times allergies are due to an ill gi and with

time of healing the gi the allergies decrease and can even stop. Oregeno oil

also does what olive leaf does healing wise, but more potent, has she tested for

oregeno(highly recommend probiotics with the use of oregeno)? Have you tried

vitamin C for stool mover? Once or twice a week if needed, I use higher dose C

in grams to get my son cleaned out. Now he has hirschsprungs and so Im sure I

use more than others would need for stool moving with C. Consider 1000mg/1gram

at 1st and see if that works, if not move up to 2grams following day.C is

excreted(loose stools) from the body of what is not needed. Also C has

ingredients in it that kills fungal/yeast issues similar to what olive leaf does

etc. Fungal/yeast issues are a huge gi problem and causing constipation and

motility issues and allergy issues. Lots of spring mountain water(no

tap/chlorine)!! With the cp diagnoses im sure she has motility issues with the

gi as well so more stimulant type movers would be better. As mentioned earlier,

aloe vera juice etc. Some magnesiums can cause more relaxed muscles and slower

contractions, there is some controversy with this. We find it depends on the

magnesium form being used. We have success with a citrate/oxide combo of

magnesium but have noticed any forms of mag citrate shouldnt be used daily and

more as an as needed supplement. It seems to cause stomach sensitivity if over

used. Jennie<><

Does she swallow pills? It sounds like you may need to do a more thorough

cleanout -- taking oxypowder or similar, senna and/or doing an enema. Then the

other things you are trying will work for maintenance. My understanding is the

CP affects gut motility, so you may need to occasionally use senna or cascara

sagrada - both natural stimulants to help with that. Jennie has had good luck

with aloe partly due to it's motility effect too.

As far as oil goes -- try coconut oil. We use it for everything except salad

dressing in our household. I prefer it for sauting since it has a higher smoke

point. It's a very healthy medium chain fatty acid.

If you haven't ordered from iherb before, use my code ROT043 and get $5 off on

your order. I have found their prices to be the cheapest I can find about 90%

of the time. (and I'm a single mom so I pinch every penny!)

Thanks. Actually my daughter is gluten free and casein free. She is also

intolerant to corn and a myriad of other foods. No soy for over a year. Right

now she is on a amino acid based formula called EO28 Splash. That is 100% of

her diet until I get a handle on these food allergies.

I would just stop all supplements and try one at a time! The fruit-eze works best when the bowel has been cleaned out first. Maybe give a laxative for a few days until the old fecal matter is removed and then start the fruit eze. How is the diet?

Was she screaming trying to go because there was a large hard stool that hurt to pass, or was it that there was liquid stool that burned on the way out? I have found with my daughter that the large stools don't bother her as much as the semi-liquid ones that various laxatives (magnesium, mineral oil, etc.) produce. For my DD, the semi-liquid stools burn and hurt much more than passing a single large stool ever does. I have stopped giving her laxatives and given up on cleanouts for the time being simply because her infrequent large stools seem so much healthier and easier on her than the frequent soft ones.

Also, almost nothing we do works in just a few days. It often takes a good ten days to see results! I would try some flower essences, maybe even something like Rescue Remedy, just to help with emotional calming.

Also, of course, if you can find a good natural practitioner like a chiropractor or naturopath to help sort all this out...that would be a good place to start! Bonnie

Does anyone see a chiropractor?I have been seeing one for the last month. He does some sort of electric thermal scan on your back and shows where you have problems- mine seem to indicate alot of tension, if you can imagine that!Anyway, I have an appointment for my son tomorrow after school.I am so excited, probably too excited, maybe nothing will happen. But, my subsequent scan showed I was way more relaxed and I have been sleeping better so... maybe something awesome will start to happen and things will start to really turn around.I am hoping that adding chiropracty will help the healing process, but it would be better if it were DRAMATIC and not subtle.I know my hopes are too high but you got to get through the days.

She is allergic to olive and the EFA I found at Whole Foods has Olive Oil in it!I found a Krill oil on Mercola last night. I'm not sure if she would react to it or not. Has anyone else used this? I also saw the constipation topic on Mercola a few days back and noticed

Hypothyroidism could cause constiption. I need to re-visit that to see what he recommends. With all of her allergic reactions, it is making it difficult to try some of the alternatives. Help!

We were out of town last Monday morning when the last try on Miralax definitely

had her cleaned out.

Abigail is G-tube fed and right now gets EO28 Splash only (an elemental

formula). I started the Fruit-eze after flying back home on Tuesday morning.

She did not go again until Friday night when I gave her a Pedia-Lax. That is

when she screamed because it would not come out. I had to help pull it out!

Then, we did another Pedia-lax Saturday morning (yesterday). I think she is all

cleaned out now, I hope! I know this is a chronic problem, that is why I'm

worried.

I'll try anything though after learning of all the side effects of Mirlax!

By the way, I don't know if she ever experienced burning on Miralax because she

is non-verbal.

Hi,

I just wanted to let you know that my 3 1/2 yr old daughter was a huge screamer also. Mine also hit, spit, screamed and cried so loud that I thought our neighbors might say something. Since starting Fruit-eze and giving it about 3 weeks to work, she is not at all screaming and freaking out like she used to. We still have some days of moaning because

her stool might be a little hard, but boy oh boy, nothing like we used to have. I actually almost video taped her so I could show the doctor what we are going through. I am so glad this stuff is working for us, I am hoping you start to see some relief soon.

PS....Yes....My daughter also needed a clean out with the Pedia-lax before we started.

Wishing you much needed luck,

I think Jeanie was kinda referring to hormone changes and the behaiviours/not neccessarily the recovery from PEG only. Recovery is good with time, not sure if it is 100% but at just about near a couple of years our son seems about 70% recovered over all health, this includes the gi. Jennie<><

I don't know the answer to your situation, everyone is different. I was just saying that if they have a behavior problem, and it sounds exactly like ours, it only gets worse with age as they only get bigger and so do the issues!

I used to have data on the % of times 6months works. Please correct me if I am wrong I believe it is about 50%. Biofeedback has a success rate of over 85%. I have never tried biofeedback. It is basically retraining the muscles of the pelvic floor. I think this is why we had so much luck with activator chiropractor and stretching the psoas muscle. My kids are doing really well, they do have occassional periods where they dont go very easily and I am extremely aggressive about making sure that they eliminate max 3 days. I am happy if they go every day and if they missed the day prior we start the day with a serving of juice. I would say about every 6 weeks I have to give Ava a Senna strip from pedia lax because she gets to day 3 with no bm.

This has really helped her colon from stretching back out. One senna strip is usually enough to get her back on track, if I wait till day 4 it takes her longer.
