Guest guest
Becky Many years ago, when Tim was diagnosed, I came across a newspaper article written by Erma Bombeck. This piece made a difference for me, especially when I had those " Why Me " moments. It goes with exactly what you are saying here. (keep in mind that this may not be completely politically correct because it was written over 20 years ago) I hope you enjoy it.... Mothers of Handicapped Children are Specially Picked This year, nearly 100,000 women will become mothers of handicapped children. Somehow I visualize God hovering over Earth selecting his instruments for propagation with great care and deliberation. As he observes, he instructs his angel to make notes in a giant ledger. " Armstrong, Beth, son, patron saint, . " " , Marge, daughter, patron saint, Cecillia. " " Rutledge, , twins, patron saint...give her Gerard. He's used to profanity. " Finally he passes a name to the angel and smiles, " Give her a handicapped child " . The angel is curious. " Why this one, God? She's so happy. " " Exactly, " says God. " Could I give a handicapped child to a mother who does not know laughter? That would be cruel. " " But has she patience? " asks the angel. " " I don't want her to have to much patience or she will drown in a sea of self-pity and despair. Once the shock and resentment wear off she'll handle it. " " I watched her today. She has that feeling of self and independence that is so necessary in a mother. The child I am going to give her has his own world. She has to make it live in her world, and that's not going to be easy. " " But Lord, I don't think she even believes in you, " God smiles. " No matter. I can fix that. This one is perfect. She has just enough selfishness. " The angel gasps, " Selfishness? Is that a virtue? " God nods, " If she can't separate herself from the child occasionally, she'll never survive. Yes, here is a woman who will never take for granted a 'spoken word.' She will never consider a 'step' ordinary. When her child says 'Momma' for the first time, she will be present at a miracle and know it! I will permit her to see clearly the things I see...cruelty, ignorance, prejudice...and allow her to rise above them. She will never be alone. I will be at her side every minute of every day, because she is doing my work as surely as if she were here by my side. " " And what about her patron saint? " asks the angel, pen poised in mid air. " God smiles, " A mirror will suffice. " Subject: God picked me to be Haileys mom Woohoo! To: MosaicDS Date: Thursday, June 19, 2008, 9:58 AM One of my other post made me relize that we are very special people. I think God hand picked us because we have the ability to truely love and truely care about what happens to other people. We can put other people ahead of our own needs and dont have a selfish bone in our bodies. I really am so grateful God picked me to be Haileys mom. I am so blessed and I really feel special. Not everyone has the ability to see what a true blessing our children really are. I tell Hailey everyday she is my sunshine and the star in my sky. She is my spring flower. She has made such a huge difference in my life. She has opened my eyes in so many ways. I am so lucky God gave this little angle to me. I really feel sorry for the people that dont have the ability to see what a great joy she is and I am so so grateful God chose me. Hats off to all of us Mothers that were hand picked by God because of who we are and what we can give to his little angles. Great job!!!! Sometimes its hard...but its always worth it.Big Hugs to all my new friends.
Guest guest
Oh Kristy, I am sitting here crying my eyes out. That is exactly what I was trying to say. Part of it anyway. The reason I even wrote it was not why me but why dont other people(in my family) see what I see. They are missing out on so much in viewing Hailey the way they do.I see a beautiful child so funny and full of life. They see the disabilities. I just dont understand why they dont see what a blessing she is. I want them to enjoy her the way I do. Guest guest
I think the problem is that many people have one vision of what people with disabilities can not do. They think back in " their time " of the one person they once knew with a disability and they think about how that person (in their eyes) was unable to be part of society. It is important for people to realize that NOW children with disabilities are just like everyone else! They have so many different therapies and resources and now because parents are raising their children just like they would any other child, instead of placing them in an institution, these children can and DO grow up to be great adults! Look at CariAnn who is about to have a baby! And Christi who is about to get married! It is just a matter of educating and advocating. There are still many who wont get it no matter what you say or do. For those, you just need to wipe your feet and move on. It is their lose and Hailey is much better off without being part of their lives. I know it hurts, but it wont always be that way. You will make friends (You have over 600 here!) and you will be a stronger person for it! As for your family, send them updates of how great Hailey is doing! Hopefully some of them will eventually get it! Guest guest
Becky and Kristy, Yes I feel very blessed that God chose me to be the mother of and , but initially (when we first got the diagnosis) I thought God was punishing me - I was NEVER the one with patience, I only wanted the best of everything (not the most expensive, but the best), I wanted it all: the perfect husband, the perfect career, the perfect kids, the cat and the dog. Now all I want is a clean, organized house ;-) teaches me so much every day - about patience, about loving, and about HOW very much I can love. teaches me patience and caring and at least one new fact every day. When I was laid off from my job, I was very depressed but (my husband) picked up the ball and has done very well for himself (proving that I do have the perfect husband). I am going back to school to get my teachers certification so I can be on the same schedule as my kids (which will be the perfect career) and so I can teach my children better (both certifications in Reg Ed and Special Ed). Still would like that clean organized house but we work on it everyday ;-) Darlene - Mom to (11) and (9) P.S. - is leaving on Saturday for his first overnight camp week - a special camp week just for kids on the autistic spectrum right here in PA > Oh Kristy, I am sitting here crying my eyes out. Guest guest
Darlene, I think that is one of the most wonderful men that I know! He is so caring and so considerate that I think if all the men in the world had even half of his qualities, the world would be a better place! (not bashing men-just praising !) is one of those rarities that is so intuned with what is going on around him and such a caring father that I am amazed to know him! (He can just see that look in my eye and know that I need a coke! LOL) You are indeed a very blessed woman with your family! I am glad you know it! Guest guest
It is really just her 23 yr old sister that acts like she is gonna catch something. She once told me to beat her tail and she wont act that way. It was at that moment when I realized she doesnt understand Haileys disabilities. I havent left Hailey with her in the past and now never will. Hailey has calmed down alot and is doing good dealing with the adhd. They finally got her meds right. I wish her sister understood that spanking was not the answer. I did however tell her maybe I should have spanked you and you wouldnt have that attitude. lol...I am so thankful I have all of you for support and friendship. As for my friends that bolted because they didnt want to be around with all that is going on. I really dont care anymore. Hailey and I dont need them in our lives. There are to many real people out there that care and believe in her and her progress.I will still continue to try to educate her sister on her disabilities and her progress in hopes that one day she will get it.That was good advise...Thanks > > > > From: Becky <ladynotlistenin@ ...> > > Subject: God picked me to be Haileys mom Woohoo! > > To: MosaicDS@yahoogroup s.com > > Date: Thursday, June 19, 2008, 9:58 AM > > > > > > > > > > > > > > One of my other post made me relize that we are very special > people. Guest guest
I just want to add one more thing. I am not speaking to my daughter or daughter in law because of the way that they have treated Hailey and act around her. Thier attitudes pushed me to my breaking point and I blew. I told them they should thank god they are healthy and have not had to go through the things Hailey has had to indure. I told them that I didnt want to talk to either one of them until there attitudes changed. She was just a child and should be viewed as one and I said alot more. So I guess when they get up the nerve to call me and say thier sorrys....Ill start trying to help them understand what Hailey is going through. But until then I guess we just wont speak. Some people are just ignorate and Im dealing with two of them. We can only pray for them. Its thier lose. > > > > From: Becky <ladynotlistenin@ ...> > > Subject: God picked me to be Haileys mom Woohoo! > > To: MosaicDS@yahoogroup s.com > > Date: Thursday, June 19, 2008, 9:58 AM > > > > > > > > > > > > > > One of my other post made me relize that we are very special > people. Guest guest
Oh Kristy that was beautiful. I saved that and when I am having a why me moment I will read it. The other day I was talking to one of Isabella's therapist and she asked me how I can take every so well. I told her at first I didn't I had a few months of despair and a then a few things happened and it was like a light bulb went off in my head. On thing I had done as I am sure all mothers do, I envisioned careers for Isabella before I found out about mds. In my mind she was going to be a doctor or an engineer, or a chemist, or a model. When she was diagnosed with mds that all went out the window. Then one day I realized they were my dreams for her, not hers and not Gods. I thought long and hard about what parents truly want for their children. I came to the conclusion what we all want for our children is " happiness " . Some where along the line we equate happiness with educational and financial success, but it is not true. Sure having money makes paying the bills easier and I would worry a lot less about certain things but some of my very successful friends are the most unhappy. Therefore money and success does not equate to happiness. So if Isabella is happy doing what ever she does in life then I will have been a successful happy parent.
