Guest guest
QVar - 3 puffs, twice per day; Symbicort, 2 puffs twice per day. I do well with just these. It is the Prednisone which jacks my blood sugar up. I'll be on it for 12 days. 30 mg for 4 days, 20mg for 4 days and then 10mg for 4 days. If you are diabetic then I would reduce carbs gradually, not all at once. Are you taking Magnesium and Vitamin D? Two of the most important supplements for asthmatics from what I have read. Which steroid inhaler are you on? I recently switched from Flovent to Alvesco and I'm having less symptoms. Alvesco is a finer mist so it gets to the small airways unlike Flovent. Hope you are feeling better very soon.
Guest guest
I hate pred for that very reason-it also jacks my sugar up. However, sometimes it's a necessary evil. You can try watching your carb intake and see if that will help with the sugars but the pred will keep it up a while. Ask your dr about upping a diabetes med while you're on the pred. Mine allows an extra glimepiride when I'm on pred. To: asthma Sent: Sat, March 12, 2011 9:31:03 AMSubject: Re: Re: Suggestions Anyone? QVar - 3 puffs, twice per day; Symbicort, 2 puffs twice per day. Guest guest
I use Lantus daily (25units) and Lispro as needed. The dose varies according to my sugar levels. Guest guest
Thanks ... prayers are always welcome. I live in a fairly rural area of Alaska. Actually, by our standards, it is fairly metropolitan. We have roads, jet airline capable airport, Wal Mart, etc. Not much in the way of the clinics you mentioned. That said, it is ALWAYS cheaper to go to the ER than to let it go to the point of hospitalization. I was going to make a joke about an undertaker, but somehow that doe not seem funny just now. Anyway, I have nebulized Albuterol which is what they give me at the ER. The only thing I've received there which I can't do here is an IV dose of magnesium. Insurance kicks in in about 60 hours ... I'll set an appointment with my doc for Wed morning. If things get worse, I'll bite the bullet and head to the ER. (sigh) My priest has told me that with my health, I need not worry overmuch about the Lenten fast. He wants me to focus on my health. My disease is the cross that I bear. I wish I could do so without the complaining. I've not mastered that or the self pity yet. Pray for me, a sinner! Guest guest
Hi Mike,I think you need to consider getting on a maintenance dose of inhaled corticosteroids once you get through this exacerbation. The albuterol doesn’t treat the underlying inflammation. The prednisone does but with all the awful side effects, it should be reserved in the armory for only exacerbations. Ask your doctor for the most cost efficient inhaled steroid, like Advair (fluticasone, available as a generic in Canada I think), Symbicort or QVAR as someone else mentioned.  You can step up/down on the dose as needed to control your symptoms and the side effects should be minimal compared to the prednisone.  I hope you feel better.Malinda in CaliforniaFrom: asthma [mailto:asthma ] On Behalf Of McBrideSent: Saturday, March 12, 2011 3:20 PMTo: asthma Subject: Re: Re: Suggestions Anyone? Guest guest
Hi Mike. As you have noticed I have been off line for a couple of days. It seems that everything is quiet until I take a hiatus. Then I miss it all. My friend, you know your body well. We have been dealing with this for years now. You longer than me. Do what you have to do to get through this, but don't wait too long. I fear that something has happened to Alana, and I could not bear for something to happen to you as well right now. I am right there with you with the self pity thing. This is a new sensation for me. I will be praying for you. Please call me if there is anything I can do. Hugs.MadelineTo: asthma Sent: Sat, March 12, 2011 6:19:45 PMSubject: Re: Re: Suggestions Anyone?
