Hi Elsa

I would suggest to treat the gut for dysbiosis (in view of the history) - tiny

amounts of wormwood and/or garlic plus gut healing herbs. When I trained,

whenever juvenile RA came up, many the tutors talked about a particular

herbalist who treated this by worming the children - worked a treat. I have

recently done that for autoimmnune hypothyroid and within a month all the

symptoms were gone and the function of the thyroid went back to normal (a child

was 7 years old). Also Echinacea can aggrevate any autoimmune disorder before

you get the inflammation well under control. Licorice is a great

antiinflammatory for gut/joint symptoms. If the parents don't want to use

tinctures than go for teas rather than powders, although slippery elm is a great

idea (or marshmallow) - must be taken at other times than teas cause they will

not be absorbed very well. Tinctures work extremely well for babies and I

would try to persuade the parents.

Hope it helps

This is very strange. Coincidence?

On the 17th of May I saw an 8 month old girl, who was diagnosed with arthritis

and offered steroids and methotrexate. The parents where reluctant to use such

drugs and wanted to try herbs.

PC: since February raised temperature am and evening and migrating skin rashes

on and off, child cries a lot especially when handled, sometimes swelling of

wrists.Increased ESR (100+),increased WBC and platelets.6 wks ago course of

broad spectrum antibiotics. 4 wks ago Naproxin (NSAD) was replaced by

Ibuprofen.Diet:Neocate (milk substitute), some breast feeding, some solids since

6 month old.

PMH: normal birth,no vaccination, no vit K, breastfed for 2 wks, then

supplemented with formula, which caused digestive Sx (diarrhoea), change to

goats milk decreased git Sx. Given Gaviscon for reflux until 1 month ago when

put on Neocate. Bronchitis after one wk of initial fever, also hospitalised with

possible pomphlyx on foot and antibiotics given.

My Rx for the child: slippery elm and marshmallow powder, turmeric powder,

aromatic waters of chamomile and boswellia and quater of a powdered Echinacea

tablet daily.(parents not willing to take tinctures). Rx for mother: Echinacea

tablets and boswellia aromatic water.

Unfortunately, as the pt had been getting worse, with increased crying and

pain, the parents have decided to go for the steroids and methotrexate, but would

like to give herbal support with the drugs.

Has anybody had any experience with herbs and those kind of drugs? The drugs

will be given in cycles of 3 days: IV, then orally, then IV again.I'm thinking

of slippery elm (away from drugs), echinacea and liver support. Any comments

would be very much appreciated. I am a bit apprehensive as I had a similar pt

scenario not long ago: a little girl, same age, also started with reflux and

itchy rashes, was given omeprazole, antibiotics, steroids, methotrexate and a

succession of many more drugs, endet up being tube fed, on oxygen and with

kidney failure (which was the point when I was ask for some nettle seeds to

support the kidney). Sadly the little soul died not long after.

Thanks in advance

Elsa
