Maureen,

Just a couple of suggestions based on the limited info you have provided:

- fats, protein & carbs are all important. What is your son eating? Can you get nut butters, ghee, coconut oil, olive oil, animal protein, sweet potatoes, squash, etc. into him? These should help satisfy him and help him gain weight. Focus on healthy wholesome foods and not so much on processed/sugar/packaged foods.

- how do you know he's always getting dehydrated? Does he have dry skin, hair, brittle nails, cracked lips, always thirsty, etc? Also, has your doc done any labwork to rule out other things like diabetes, liver function, etc? Also, if you are concerned about dehydration, you can find electrolyte enhanced waters at the health food store.

- did your pedi give you the script for valtrex? If so, you need to be checking liver function via labwork and keeping yeast and bacteria in check.

Hope this helps. I'm sure others will have input.

juice can cause more dehydration; I'd agree with your doc its best to stick to water.

also - my son had a weight problem before going on the diet. he is 4 1/2 and around 35 pounds - which is average for the age. I think its around 53rd %ile. So - I don't see that as being a HUGE problem. (My son was at 65% at 12 months and had dropped to the 18% by 24 months, this is the best he has ever done and I am very proud to have him back at this weight).

there are alot of tricks to getting the foods in AND getting them digested/absorbed.

realize you need to make every bite (or drink) count. believe it or not my own over-weight problem helped me with this because i went to weight watchers and that's where I got the concept from - every bite counts. i worried less about the type of food and more about the eating... for example, for a while I let the "meat" go and fed him chocolate chip cookies with bean flours in them. its still protein right. Bob's Red Mill has a packaged cookie mix; you can make and freeze them and just get out three or four a day for him.

also try a probiotic and enzymes so that what goes in can be digested and absorbed - ie used - by the body

if you post more info about the specific problem with the weight - maybe we can help more? ie why is his weight a problem if he's average? is it that he's normally average but loses weight, if so how much weight are we talking and for how long a time?

If you feel he's truly dehydrated, he needs emergency medical care.

True dehydration requires IV liquids, oral will not do it,

particularly if he's already become dehydrated while drinking. There

is a condition called diabetes insipidus where the kidneys cannot hold

water. It is treatable, is not diabetes associated with blood sugar,

but needs to be tested to be sure. Also, a hospital can test a

metabolic panel and CBC and refer you to someone who may be able to

help. Do you have state/government health insurance? With that the

proper tests can be run, you just have to find a doctor willing to listen.

If you cannot see a doctor, where are you getting the valtrex from? If

it's his regular doctor, he should be running a comprehensive

metabolic panel anyway to ensure his liver is okay.

Just mom advice, not medical.

you need more then water and juice, fats in it will help, like coconut milk do it WITH your juice and some fruits and make smoothies, throw in some oils as well, or nuts to make it even more nutritious, he may be lacking in pancreatic enzymes not allowing for absorption of foods and fats for cell growth and muscle gaining, called anabolizm and may be in what is called catabolism which is where they eat and survive off there own muscles

carnintine will help with some of that, as well as zinc being high enough, and taurine as well

You are getting great answers from the others on this one, I just

wanted to add that I would not listen to your family telling you the

diet " isn't good for him. " Most of our GFCF kids have the healthiest

diets around - the people telling you the diet is bad for him are

most likely the same people telling you he should be allowed to go to

Mc's and pig out on french fries and cheeseburgers, then wash

it down with McFlurry. Sorry for the rant, I HATE people that have no

experience with diet trying to tell others what to do.

Gluten and casein is not necessary for survival :-) And it may in

fact be harming your son. You have already realized this, so stick

with it and ignore all the other chatter from uninformed people.

The diet is healthy, yes. But I do distinctly remember taking my son to see a doc who required us to keep a 7-day food journal. He was shocked at how little fat was in my son's diet. He urged us to give him fat of any kind -- if he wouldn't eat meats (which at the time he did not care for them) then add butter, lard, bacon grease, oils, etc. to all of his foods.

Has he been checked for diabetes? I am not an expert, but if I

remember right, excessive thirst and weight loss are two of the

symptoms of diabetes. Excessive urination, fatigue, excessive

hunger, and irritability can be symptoms also.

Just to add to this, in addition to IgG or IgE responses, the body

can also have an IgA response in the gut. This is the response they

are looking for when they screen for celiac. My dd showed an IgA

response to gluten and was then confirmed by endoscopy to have celiac

disease. When she had an IgG test done though, she did NOT have an

IgG response to gluten. She has never been tested for IgE, but she

never had any of the typical IgE symptoms.

So just because someone does not show an intolerance through IgG or

IgE testing, it doesn't mean they necessarily tolerate the gluten (or

whatever food you suspect.) Then there are the people who can test

negative on all three tests and still have a response! The best test

is a strict trial.
