Well, just been out for a walk as I often do, the usual route. And for the first time in ages, I didn't feel like I was short of breath at all. The difference? It's snowy! Evidently the cold air is good for me. If it's just cold it affects me, but cold and snowy doesn't. Well, doesn't affect my lungs, anyway. Pity about my ears, hands and feet!Loads of schools closed, including the one I had been booked to work at this morning. They are still paying me, though, as I had made the effort and gone in. I do best in cool moist air, like at the beach here in California. Hot, moist

air is quite another thing -- makes me feel like I'm breathing through water.

Our snow is only in the mountains where I live. We used to go up in our 4-wheel

drive truck and take our children sledding. Makes me want to find my snow

clothes and go up this afternoon to enjoy the fresh clean air.

Maybe the difference is the humidity that the snow brings Jenn?

I'm not bothered about driving in it - if I can avoid it I do, but if I can't it doesn't stress me out. There was a big area of compacted down snow in Tesco carpark today, with a space with nothing to crash into, so I had a play :) If I ever end up skidding in it, I need to have practised what to do.JennTha can tek t'lass outta Yorkshire...! Mike, a friend at my church is from Palmer. She said the same thing about the snow. She doesn't mind snow, she just hates driving in it like I do. I don't mind it on the ground so much but I don't like it on the roads. To: asthma Sent: Thu, December 2, 2010 10:18:40 AMSubject: Re: Snow!

I'll drive short distances if I must, like to the store. I will not commute the 26 miles (about 41.86 kilometers) to school though. It's cold enough (32 F or 0 C) to snow here but there's not enough moisture in the air right now. I'm looking up conversions to avoid confusion with our American measures. To: asthma Sent: Thu, December 2, 2010 3:41:26 PMSubject: Re: Snow!

OK folks, I am trying to be supportive and understanding ... but I am sitting here smiling. I just drove to Anchorage (Alaska) today to see my doc and to get my Xolair injection.. During good weather it is about a 3 hour drive. With today's icy roads, it took about 4 hours, each way. Just now it is 14 (-10c) but had warmed up to 22 earlier. Our biggest worry is the moose on the highway. We saw a nearly new full sized Doge pick up truck just minutes after it hit a moose this morning. The truck is a total wreck ... the moose is now processed and what could be salvaged is in a food bank meat locker. The drive itself was spectacular. The fresh snow on the mountains, the icy inlet/fjord. Crystal clear blue sky with no wind. We ahve a winter

storm warning for this area tomorrow ... heavy snow, wind. My wife and I were totally blessed with he nice drive today.Jenn ... You should bring your Guides here for a visit. What a contrast we could offer to your recent visit to Morocco. Mike McBrideLike the apple of Thine eye preserve me, O Lord God; defend me and beneath Thy wings shelter me from temptations. I knew you'd find it amusing! Have a look at the BBC website... Thing is, where you are, you HAVE to have the right equipment to deal with the snow to function. Whereas here, it's only a few weeks a year, so is it really worth investing in expensive equipment such as snow ploughs, or people buying special car tyres for the sake of about 3-4 weeks of snow? It's currently -11C outside, and foggy, at 8-20am. Luckily i'm not working this morning, just this afternoon, as I don't think my chest could cope going out in that especially as I've woken full of cold. I felt short of breath last nightJennTha can tek t'lass outta Yorkshire...! Don't brand me, don't classify me, don't tell me what to wear. Mike I also am smiling too because I grew up in Rochester NY and snow is a part of our lives for 6 months of the year. Yesterday Buffalo NY had a blizzard that dropped 3 feet of snow overnight...that much snow in a short time frame DOES create problems, especially with high winds in the area. Many motorists were stranded on the Thruway when a tractor trailer jackknifed and traffic came to a stand still. Normally though a bad winter day at home drops 12-15 inches of snow, with the worst travel being on any north/south corridors. We didnt close schools unless the wind chill factor was -19 Farenheit (-28C) but if weather was supposed to be really terrible by afternoon rush hour, they might close early so that kids who walked home were not in excess danger. Driving in the snow really wasnt too bad if you drive sensibly and slow down & give yourself extra time to get where you are going. It is hard to remember that down here in GA they really dont have the resources we had back home to deal with the snow removal. Last Feb when we got 5 inches of snow, Im not sure what was more entertaining...watching people freak out about driving or the snow itself...:-)

We don't use any special tires, just all season radials here in Tennessee. If it's really icy for a length of time, some people invest in studded tires but it's not worth the money if it's not that bad that long. It's 36 F (2 C) here. Your temp reading comes up to about 12 F which is quite cold and I was complaining about the 20s, which would be a bit below zero there, here yesterday. This cold is bothering my asthma too and I'm feeling tight this morning. My peak flow high number today is 462 which is 86% of my high number and the FEV1 is 2.16. I'm a bit congested too. If this keeps on, I'll be back on pred soon. I'll use my neb and see if things improve. To: asthma Sent: Fri, December 3, 2010 3:25:15 AMSubject: Re: Snow!

LOL. We can't help it if you are touch with a special type of crazy. HA! I remember the roads in Wyoming when I was younger. They just packed down the snow. We drove all over the place. Last year in Denver it didn't stop anyone either, but here in the South. Nope not getting out on the roads. Too many teenagers who think that throwing a cinder block in the bed of their 4 wheel drive will make their trucks magically turn into a snow mobile. I will stay home and enjoy what is in my yard.

I do have to say that snowstorms seem to trigger me in the same way that rain does. Not quite as severly (probably the lack of lightning), but they are hard. Anyone know where it never rains or snows and is not a desert? (I know I know, but I can dream.)
