Guest guest
It's called an EEG, they put needles into your muscles to test your nerve reaction to see if there is damage, dead nerves, basically any problems with your nerves. YES it is painfull, I have had several on legs and arms, the last one I left hysterically in tears he hurt me so bad, not to scare you, but to be honest. The first one I had in my arms wasn't so bad, it hurt, but nothing like this last one. In my opinion, if you have loss of feeling and are numb, chances are you have some kind of nerve damage, and there is no repairing damaged nerves. So the test is kind of pointless to have if you know there already is damage. I had to do it to satisfy the insurance company to prove I needed surgery that they wouldn't pay for until they saw that the dr's needed to get the pressure off my spine so I could feel my arms again. I had shortages in my nerves due to disc herniations and was losing function of my arms. Even though I had the surgery I still have nerve damage but I can use my arms again to a certian point. I know I'm rambaling here...sorry, hope this helps you! Guest guest
Kathleen's response: My son had an EEG done when he was 6 years old. Needless to say he wasn't happy. I've had a few EEG's done, and they weren't comfortable, but the pain has slipped my memory. The EEG was done on my son to see if he had any nerve disease. We now know he has EDS. The test is important to see if your nerves are damaged enough to warrant surgery. Like any other test, it's better to be safe than sorry. Guest guest
This test can be painful but it is not always. After my 2nd fusion surgery i had healing issues which turned into mrsa, to make a long story short i went through debridement and had a sponge vac on my wound for a month, my incision was opened for this so the plastic surgeon had to take me to the OR to stitch my incision back up. After this procedure my shoulder was hurting then i started losing the feeling on my right side, i was unable to walk by the end of the week, Dr. B was out of town and i was put through basically every neuro test to find out what was wrong. I had the EMG on the back of my neck, all the way down my right arm. It was not that painful. The needle part didnt hurt as much as i thought it would. It was like a little pin prick and he was very gentle. The uncomfortable part was the shocks and i got used to it. They were not painful, they were just uncomfortable. When i went for the test i had no clue i was having it done. They came to my room and took me up there, i was freaking out in my head and scared to death because i had heard horror stories. My dad had one here in OKC and he said it was not bad just weird. BTW in the end the test that showed results was dr. remy came in lifted on my head and i heard and felt a loud pop. Needless to say i was in ICT that day and in the OR in two days to have my fusion redone again. I had poor positioning by the plastic surgeon and it caused my C5 vertebrate to crush and ruined my hardware. I guess the 3rd time is the charm. My advice is take deep breaths if it is painful and think of your happy place.
