You could ask your doc for tessalon pearles. They suppress the reflex to cough. You WILL still cough, but it shouldnt be too bad. Sometimes with a cold you are going to cough period. Coughing is the body's way of trying to rid the lungs/airway of a foreign body. Unfortunately for us, our airways are already trigger happy and a cough tends to hang on forever... The tessalon pearles do help me some, but you have to take them exactly as directed or they arent effective..and for me, it takes a day or two before they are really noticeably effective.

I hope you feel better soon.

coughing fit!

I am about to lose what little marables that I have if I don't stop coughing.

Went to the ER on sunday, got a treatment (two) bumped up on pred 50mg then back down to my daily dose of 10mg. Xrays were ok.

However, I have this nagging cough that will not quit! I have tried taking more treatments at home. Cough syrup-suppresent (no luck).

I belive I caught a small cold and that is what is trigger this cough so badly.

I called my primary doc but he has not called back yet. In the meantime, I am drinking coffee, tea, water and taking cough drops.

Any suggestions?? i don't want this to get out of hand any more than it already has.

Ann,How do tessalon perles work? In general, I don't even bother with cough suppressants. Many of them combine with some form of narcotic and just are not effective for me at all. Madeline To: asthma Sent: Fri, December 31, 2010 12:26:40 AMSubject: Re: coughing fit!

These work by anesthetizing the cough receptors in your vagal nerve fibers that are found in your lungs and respiratory passages. It can also decrease the cough reflex within your central nervous system.

Basically what happens is that your peripheral nervous system sends a message to the brain that says you need to cough. The brain then tells the proper nerves in the airways to cough. We tend to get those nagging coughs we get because our airways are hypersensitive to start with, so the brain is flooded with lots of messages that say we need to cough, but not enough to say we dont need to cough anymore so we just keep coughing. The tessalon (also known as benzonatate) works by slowing down the messengers that tell the brain we need to cough. The end result should be that we cough less. It wont completely take the cough away, but it should slow it down some and/or decrease the intensity of the coughing. The cough reflex is not completely anesthetized.

There are a couple of key things that need to happen to make this effective though...one is that the person needs to drink 1.5 to 2L of fluid per day to decrease the thickness of the bronchial secretions and make it easier to move them out. Secondly it needs to be taken as directed so that you maintain a therapeutic level. The side effects are similar to that of a cold...headache, mild dizziness, sedation, burning sensation in eyes, nasal congestion, constipation, GI upset, nausea, pruritis (itchy skin), skin eruptions, chest numbness, chilly sensation, and hypersensitivity reactions. Personally Ive never experienced any side effects that I could directly attribute to the tessalon...I really cant say if I had any or not, but Ive never had some of the more obvious ones.

I hope that answers your question!

My primary doc called me something call "promethazine/codeine" well I took it and it did help with the nagging cough that wouldn't quit and I was able to get some sleep.

The gunk in my chest has now broken up and I'm able to bring it up (sorry tmi) because before it was just a dry cough and the cough was making it harder to breath and my chest was tightening more. Now my stomach muscles/ribs are so sore from coughing so much.

So I didn't want to take too much of this cough syrup because of the codeine, so I haven't taken any more since wednesday night. But it gave me some much needed relief from coughing.

Hopefully I will keep fighting this cold with vit c and lots of water. That also helps to.

Thanks all for the suggestions.

Hugs

A lot of this sounds very similar to the way the narcotics work. Am I wrong in thinking that? This would lead me to think that they would not work any better than the narcotic cough suppressants. Also, if it doesn't work for a day or two, isn't that kind of a moot point when trying to control an asthmatic cough?MadelineTo: asthma Sent: Sat, January 1, 2011 1:26:49 AMSubject: Re: coughing fit!

I sure can get into coughing fits fast and they sometimes feel like they could

be fatal. Emphysema/Asthma. Guess they could be, huh?

It's been YEARS since I used Tessalon Pearls, 20 to be exact. Last time was in

Virginia. I thought they didn't make them anymore!
