Guest guest
That is great! Congrats! I have a questions about colace. The ingredients didn't looks so great - Polyethylene glycol 400 is one of them. Is this something like what is in Miralax? Any idea how much safer Colace is? I would like to wean my son from Miralax and might consider using Colace instead. Thanks, Cristina > > Hello all! Sorry I have not been around much but been very busy with life. My son has been off of miralax since Janruary! It was very scary at first and we've had many difficulties when we took him off. We took him off cold turkey after telling the GAstro doc that we were not satisfied with the side effects, etc. He went to the bathroom regularly after that for several weeks....still in his diaper of course. He is three years old and two months old! We found that after the miralax had left his system and wore off that he had a HARD time pushing out the poo on his own even when it was relatively soft. He would become frustrated, etc. Almost like his bowels were paralyzed! We ended up using over the counter stool softeners, senna strips for another month and this is what worked for us for a while. Over time though my son got good at holding it in...this was our biggests struggle. He was having reactions to the pedi-lax stool softener so we took him off of it. Little did we know that it contained a small amount of PEG and red dye which he is allergic to we just found out. > > I found myself feeling pushed to use suppositories, etc and it only took once for my son to realize that he would rather sit on the potty and try to go rather than have these awful things daily. So....that night after having a horrible fight with him and having to resort to an enema that night because he refused to poop in his diaper anymore....he cried as he announced that he wanted to try the potty! Little did I know that this was a blessing in disguise and now looking back I feel SURE that it was impossible to potty train him while on a laxative and he got so tired of pooping in his pants and us having to change him. He pooped in the potty from that day on! I have tried to drop all laxatives, etc but once he has had a hard poop things seem to reverse again. Fear sets in and then he starts witholding again. So this is what we are doing at the moment that seems to be working: > > I daily give him a teaspoon of Bowel formula #3 by Dr. Schulze....which is an herbal formula to help with constipation and to prevent it. Seems to be working marvelously. > > Along with that I give him one capsule of colace daily which is just a stool softener without all the laxative stuff, stimulants in it. I think over time as he gets past the fear of going we can then take him off the stool softener, etc and gradually take him off the bowel formula as well. Along with this we are doing a really healthy diet with lots of fiber, juice, probiotics, supplements like aloe vera and daily potty sits. We do potty sits after breakfast and dinner. Some days he cries and does not want to go and then some days is fine! Im just so happy to be off the miralax this long. We will keep going and see what the next steps will be. We are doing antifungals, etc and working on his tummy issues. One day hoping he will be home free! Once it warms up we will go all out with the potty training and train him to also pee pee in the potty instead of a pull up. This is a HUGE leap for us! We never want to go back to miralax or harsh laxatives. >
Guest guest
, Yes this is the same ingredient.............PEG 400 is a smaller molecule, which is absorbed more quickly................wouldn't recommend at all.............the smaller the molecule the easier it gets through the pores.............. Guest guest
, Yikes....I just discovered tonight what is really in colace! To my shock and horror it does contain that little bit of PEG. When my husband bought this I only was looking at the active ingredient since he threw out the box. I was thinking it was ok! So back to square one then! We will still be using the herbal stuff but still would like to find ways to soften his stools! There is not much out there that has worked for us and he gets constipated VERY easily! Guest guest
Jeanie, I absolutely believe it an sadly....I think most comapnies that make this stuff very well know the side effects. I think people abuse these products when it plainly states on the box or bottle that it's not intended for long term use. What am I to do? Not sure what to use or where to go from here without using the colace! Guest guest
Cayce, there are only a few reasons for constipation so it never hurts to rule out a lack of good bacteria...............try Kirkman's chewable probiotic.........it works awesome....... http://www.kirkmanlabs.com/ViewProductDetails@Product_ID@184@Product_Group_ID@... I know you you've tried a probiotic, but there's something about THIS one that works, probably the xylitol that has a laxative affect.......... Guest guest
Jeanie, Hi! Yes...that is the one we are using. I get mine from www.taoofherbs.com! It's kind of pricey and it's the cheapest place I have found it thus far. I found out about it from Doug Kaufman from the show called Know The Cause! We are also using another product he suggested from a company called NSC.....it's called Beta Glucan. The beta glucan has helped my sons eczema issues tremendously. I was hoping the probiotics would help with constipation too but no luck thus far.
Guest guest
I gotta consider this one! Seems to help with increasing white blood cells(for fighting infections), surprisingly helps with oral candida(this one stumps me), I wonder if they manufactor xylitol with the source choice of what they use to extract it from, example, from the tree, berries, corn etc. Thanks Jeanie for this info!! Seems to have other good benefits along with the looser stools! Guest guest
my girl is constipated again......just bought pedia-lax....i hope it does not have anything bad in it. Guest guest
Angi, Are you using the strips or the stool softener by pedia-lax? The stool softener contains PEG.....the same ingredient as miralax but in smaller amount. My son could not take it because he's allergic to red dye....which is what is in that. He breaks out in a rash soon after taking it. WE are still experimenting! Guest guest
Jeanie, The Dr. Ohiras actually has 12 strains of bacteria including the TH10 strain. Im willing to try Kirkmans but the only downside is my son hates Chewables. We have tried chewable probiotics before. Im willing to get a bottle and try it but will have to wait until more finances come in. Thanks for bringing that to my attention! The only thing that boggles me is why Doug Kaufman suggests this product. He's really into the whole fungal, mold issues and this is his top product he suggests for everybody. Do you know Doug Kaufman from that show Know The Cause? I never even noticed it contained mushrooms....thought those were medicinal. Guest guest
Marg, I've taken the Dr. Ohiras myself and it NEVER gave me Diahreah! I have taken other probiotics that messed my stomache up. I've only had luck with Natrens and this one. My son is STILL constipated while on this as well so it's definately NOT giving him diahreah. He took the Natrens when he was a baby and up....worked well while he was still on milk and I could mix the powder in like that. I don't take probiotics anymore....I try to get them naturally from raw fruits, veggies! I also like Kimche, Kombuch and other fermented foods and beverages are GREAT for increasing good bacteria in the gut. Little did we know that it contained a small amount of PEG and red dye which he is allergic to we just found out.I found myself feeling pushed to use suppositories, etc and it only took once for my son to realize that he would rather sit on the potty and try to go rather than have these awful things daily. So this is what we are doing at the moment that seems to be working:I daily give him a teaspoon of Bowel formula #3 by Dr. Schulze....which is an herbal formula to help with constipation and to prevent it. Seems to be working marvelously.Along with that I give him one capsule of colace daily which is just a stool softener without all the laxative stuff, stimulants in it.

Guest guest
Jeanie, I think you are right! I felt that instinctively but was not sure of myself! Now looking at it that way....it makes sense. He's had a bit of a rash with the Colace too. The Colace to MY SHOCK and horror has PEG in it too! It's just AWFUL! Should I just take him off the colace cold turkey? Im gonna try this product called fruit-eze and will also be trying kirkmans as soon as our other probitoics runs out. Guest guest
Kirkman labs makes anything in any form, just for the people with special needs..........but you can get in any form http://www.kirkmanlabs.com/--- Subject: Re: This is what is working so far!!To: miralax Date: Sunday, March 8, 2009, 10:51 AM Jeanie, The Dr. I never even noticed it contained mushrooms... .thought those were medicinal. Guest guest
Jeanie, Have you tried the fruit-eze? If so......why do you think it did not work for you? Just trying to get others ideas of what they have tried and what did not work. I have heard of juice plus chewable vitamins but my son HATED them and would not eat them. He does not like things he has to chew or that are gummy! It's a pain for sure. The kirkmans is on my list to try. I just have to wait now till we run out of the other because my husband will kill me if I wasted two months of probiotics and then ordered more!
