My hubby is AS and I am ADHD/OCD/MDD. We DO have a cat, but we have no kids, and we love our cat. He is hairless so he is less smelly. We're also neutering him to avoid spray. His poop SMELLS. SO BAD. And my husband gets grossed out since he is sensitive to smells. But we both knew we wanted a pet because we're not planning to have kids due to his AS causing some neediness and codependency that would be upset by a child.

My tip is this, in any area where you consider bringing something new into the AS equation:If either one of you disagree on a pet/kid/whatever, DO NOT DO IT. Because if you do, the one who is against it will always feel slighted and annoyed or resentful, and the one who was pro the idea will feel attacked if there is obvious annoyance. Pets deserve a home where they can get love from everyone. Not just one or two of the family members. They sense " loathe " as much as people, if not more. So if you're thinking no because you're sensitive, just don't. Accommodating someone else and then suffering greatly with sensory issues is not fun.

On the OTHER hand, maybe an outdoor only cat? You can get a good little mouser and let him roam the yard and the kids can see him once in a while and your wife will be satisfied with having a furry friend around.

Just some thoughts. Apologies for being so dead on the forum on my end - we moved and we're still adapting. :)Danica
