Guest guest
Angel, there is a probiotic that you can get from Target (they ordered them for me) called Culturelle with Lactobacaillus GG. They come in capsule form and you can open them and sprinkle the insides. A gastroenterologist had us get them for my son. On another note, I have a friend with a daughter with DS who has hearing loss. Her parents are currently investigating something called the BAHA hearing aid system. I told her I would ask to see if anyone anywhere had any experience or information on this. Apparently, it is a surgery where a metal piece is inserted behind the ear and sounds bounce off it to the other ear. If anyone has any information or results of this I could gladly pass it along to her. Thanks. Terry, Mom to Craig 19 Re: Re: Vitamins Thanks for that ! Another thing, I don't know how well received they are, but probiotics. My son, besides the MDS, has a bowel disease, and a portion of his large intestine has been removed. has ALWAYS chosen drink over food- so obviously hydration is another issue! I've contemplated getting some probiotics from a health food store and adding them to 's food now and then. They are carried at places like Walmart, but can't swallow pills. I know they can be found in powder form. For now though, I always keep yogurt around, and try to get him to eat it at least every other day- but I think it's really helped! First of all they are supplements..this means they are supplementing what your are alrady giving yoru child to eat. Secondly, we are all at greater risk of being mineral deficient as opposed to vitamin deficient this is because so much added vitamins are in the food we purchase such as breads and cereals. Thirdly, antioxdants are of tremendous benefit; they help the body to fight free radical damage. This is when oxidative stress occurs and causes cell damage. Antioxidnats are helpful in all body funcitons they help to keep the system cleaner..so to speak..freer of the oxidative waste. Fourth, nutrition is not what improves brain function per se, although omega three's help to protect the brain from oxidative damage and you need to be well nourished, The number one fuel for the brain is glucose. What does improve brain function is using the brain, stimulating the brain, doing acitivities that are not already memorized, such as writing with your left hand if your are a righty, and challenging the mind to think as in doing puzzles, solving problems, etc. So it is use and challenge that improves brain function. Fifth, we all coul duse a does of extra nutrients becasue we are up against time pressures, financial pressures, we worry about stuff and this creates stress which releases stress hormones into the body which causes damage...hence the need for antioxidants. Kids with Down sydnrome have a more rapid methylation cycle, this causes an increase in folic acid and it does not necessarily get absorbed hence there is a build up...this is one reason kids with Down sydnrome are susceptble to Leukemia...anyway..antioxidants..help...repair and vitmins and minerals and proteins help rebuild..therefore..eat as sensibly as possible and add a few extra nutrients just to be safe. I have a problem with the study that was done in England. One thing they did not measure was whether or not the kids were healthier, for instance was their immunity improved, did they have better resistance?..also Kids with Down syndrome are notorious for malabsorbtion problems..were they actully able to measure how much of the nutrients got absorbed?...They did indicate that in the urine , both the control group and the kids taking the vitmins uirne samples were similar..this would indicate to me a problem with malabsorbtion. My best statement..is if they are used as directed and good quality ones are taken, and you don't expect them to FIX Down syndrome.......although they may help the child's immunity..then it is a good addition..either way they cannot hurt... Guest guest
Hmmm.... I haven't heard of the BAHA hearing aid system. When you said a metal piece is inserted behind the ear, I thought you were talking about a cochlear implant, but a cochlear implant does not make sound bounce to the other ear. It bypasses the auditory nerve altogether and sends the perception of sound directly to the brain. It's only used with profoundly Deaf children, though, because it actually kills the natural hearing that the person has. A. Special Educator Simon Kenton HS 11132 Madison Pk. Guest guest
Vitamins make a big difference with my kids. I see all kinds of changes when I change vitamins. The best thing I ever did for me and my kids gi was go off iron. Iron caused huge yeast and constipation issues for me and my kids. Everyone is different, I think Jeanie is right, it is definately worth trying to make a change. To: "miralax " <miralax >Sent: Sunday, February 1, 2009 8:49:09 AMSubject: vitamins Has anyone ever changed their childrens vitamins? This can cause or help constipation also. I know that there are many people on here with constipation from birth but with prenatal vitamins, they have a lot of Iron and will affect the stool, and can cause constipation. So I was just wondering that this could be a key issue....... ......... Maybe they could be deficient? or maybe they are getting too much of an ingredient? I just thought I'd throw this out there for everyone to consider, in hopes for some relief for someone? I really like shaklee vitamins, they have a chewable called Ocean wonders that is the only vitamin I've ever taken that makes you feel good, makes your nails hard and healthy. And makes your hair grow........ ......I've never seen this in any vitamin and they are all natural and dried at 100 degrees to eliminate chemical processing.. ......... ..I've taken them for 30 years....... ........the only real way to tell would be to have your biochemistry checked but for those who are struggling, it wouldn't hurt to try different vitamins to see if there is an improvement? http://search. shaklee.net/ ?siteURL= amFuaHVybGV5% 0D%0A%09% 09 & pws_col=MzQ% 3D%0D%0A% 09%09 & sn1=SHVybGV5IEhlYWx 0aCBSZXNvdXJjZXM sIEluYy4% 3D%0D%0A% 09%09 & sn2=SmFuIEh1cmxleSw gUlBoIA%3D% 3D%0D%0A% 09%09 & q=ocean+wonders & productSearch_ button.x= 12 & productSearch_ button.y=
