I am so sorry about what you are going through. Although I have no experience

with a NH yet, I am shocked that they would send your dad to the emergency

room because they cannot handle him. I had no idea they operated like that. I

assumed it was their job to handle their patients. It scares me. I hope you

find your way through this very difficult situation and know that there are many

here that are thinking of you.

Best Hugs to you & your mom

This was going to be my 1st week with experience with a NH. I was

emotional about it but I never thought it would be the nightmare

that it has turned out to be. Last Friday my dad was placed in a NH

for the 1st time. Saturday he ended up in the ER because the NH

could not handle him. He was in the hospital until Wednesday and

then was placed in a new NH that had a dedicated (locked) dementia

unit. Last night (Thursday) we got a call from the facility saying

that once again dad was sent to the ER because he had behavior

problems that they could not handle. After a night in the ER he has

now been sent to a geriatric psychiatric unit at a hospital about 2

hours away from me and my mom. They said that he would be there for

2 weeks while they evaluated him and changed his medication. I'm

very worried about this - I want to be positive and hope that they

change his medication for the better. But I have a fear that he

will be worse coming out than when he went in. Can anyone give me

pros or cons to this kind of unit and med evaluations?

I'm also worried about my mom. I know that the disease has drained

her too but this week she can hardly survive. I'm trying to help

her through but I don't want to lose her too. She's going through

what I see as the many stages of grief and she is going through them

all at the same time. How do I comfort her???? She is having such

a hard time with the decision to finally place my dad.
