Guest guest
We have used VSL#3 with no results, but I know that many others on this list and on the low oxalates list have had very good results with it. With my daughter, probiotics seem to help her enormously with oxalates, and stopping her from having burning poops (which bother her much more than big hard poops do). So that's important. But it hasn't helped her constipation. On the other hand, some members of my family find that probiotics do loosen stools...so I guess it just depends. If it doesn't work for you, I would encourage you to try different strains. I was struggling with a rash that was caused by yeast and it seemed like all the acidopholus in the world would not help me, but when I switched to Jarrodophilus, which has a few more strains in it, my rash improved radically and is almost gone. I know that may seem unrelated to constipation, but, as I'm learning, everything is connected... Bonnie Has anyone used Threelac or VSL#3 or both with your dd? If so, which one worked better? My dd has severe constipation & the only regimen that has worked that I have tried so far is a Calcium Magnesium supplement along with Plum juice every day & baby prunes with cereal every morning. The Cal Mag I know works because I ran out & she was unable to go. Thanks so much! Yvette A.
Guest guest
Bonnie, Thanks so much for your response. I just ordered Threelac & some digestive enzymes from Kirkman. I like you believe it is all connected. According to the studies 80+% of your immune system is in your GI tract so if it’s not working properly you won’t feel well. I do hope this will help my dd. I’ll keep the group posted. Thanks again. Yvette A. We have used VSL#3 with no results, but I know that many others on this list and on the low oxalates list have had very good results with it. Guest guest
Yvette, Threelac has antifungal properties and I wouldn't recommend for a child, I believe it's too strong...............VSL#3 is also a very potent probiotic, I'd try the Kirkmans chewable........you can break it up and choose the dose...........I'm telling you, it has been a lifesaver. Guest guest
Jeanie, you can't really overdose on probiotics...my doctor says there's no way I would ever get too high a dose into my five-year-old. They're not a drug. Also, I'm pretty sure all probiotics are antifungal. Guest guest
I'm not so sure about that..........my friend who weighs about 285, was taking a double dose of Kirkmans chewable and broke out in these heavy sweats, he backed off and they went away.....................there is a specific dose for probiotics as well..............I just looked it up to double check and Threelac is a little different...............I really think Threelac is specifically for candida...........there is two ways to fight candida. A) you can take antifungels to kill it, or take probiotics to build the good bacteria up to take over the bad on it's own.............I choose B. I would call Kirkman before I gave him that................ Guest guest
I have heard the same as Bonnie. My guess, Jeanie, is that your friend actually probably was having a yeast problem and was unaware. Often when people feel a negative effect from taking probiotics it's a result of yeast " die off " reaction and easing up on the dose does help alleviate that. > > From: Yvette <y.andersoncomcast (DOT) net> > Subject: Threelac or VSL#3 > To: miralax@yahoogroups .com > Date: Thursday, January 8, 2009, 12:03 PM > > > > > Has anyone used Threelac or VSL#3 or both with your dd? > If so, which one worked better? > My dd has severe constipation & the only regimen that has worked that I > have tried so far is a Calcium Magnesium supplement along with Plum > juice every day & baby prunes with cereal every morning. > The Cal Mag I know works because I ran out & she was unable to go. > > Thanks so much! > > Yvette A. >
Guest guest
That was my guess..... and that's probably true, but at the moment, nobody knows for sure what caused the sweating..........but my point is that taking them in general or at high doses can cause symptoms and body changes, it changes the gut flora...............again........In my opinion, I wouldn't recommend introducing them to children in high doses, ..........even the experts haven't studied this thoroughly yet...............and like ANYTHING, you should start low and work your way up opposed to starting a child on a high dose of probiotics. When I say high doses, I'm pertaining to VSL#3 the strongest one on the market.................... Guest guest
There are many that react to to much probiotics, my son was one of them. I suspect it is reacting to the bad guys(intense battle or as mentioned, die off). We had to lower the dose greatly, it was just to much on him. Many kids and Im presumming adults as well can get hyper affects and also what Jeanie described. Probiotics are not antifungals unless the company puts antifungals in them. This wouldnt be good though beings some antifungals kill off the good bacteria(this would defeat the purpose of probiotics). We have resorted to the yogurts with them and this seems to work for our son at this time(Im guessing the dose is really really low). I think we should at times use antifungal foods/supplements to help with building up the probiotics as well(Im thinking with both the good flora buildup affect wont be as intense). The antifungals well kill the mycotoxins etc and the probiotics well help to restore the good flora. They shouldnt be taken close together at all! Our son just got the nasty bug our town has been hit with and boy does the OLE(olive leaf work), this one is so good for the yeast, fungus and virus's. A little garlic does wonders also and it is considered a strong antifungal/viral also(even kills those nasty parasites...uuuugh)!
