Guest guest
Hi - welcome to the group and so sorry you've had such a rough time getting your thyroid regulated. You didn't mention how you were feeling now. Do you have mostly hypo (tired, weight gain) symptoms or still have the hyper (fast heartrate, hand shakes, etc), or both? > > I'm in desperate need of help. I've been diagnosed with everything from hyper to Hashi's. I feel hypo (gain weight easily, extremely hard to lose weight, hair falling out, tired). Could someone help me by looking at my history below and giving me their perspective? My counts are currently " normal " . If I do have Hashi's, I've read that it should be treated with desiccated thyroid. Guest guest
Thank you for the welcome! I knew I was missing something in my " novel. " I've been feeling mostly hypo for the last several years. I gain weight super easily, my hair falls out and I'm tired all the time. I've mentioned it several times to my doctor, he draws my blood and determines my TSH is normal and sends me home. I've been reading on the Stop The Thyroid Madness website and am wondering if everything is actually normal or if the Hashi's is causing my symptoms and should be treated like she recommends. > > > > I'm in desperate need of help. Guest guest
Well it sounds like with your thyroid scan that underactive thyroid is now confirmed. Your tests seemed to indicate an early thyroid 'swing' to hyperthyroidism - the body trying to launch into emergency mode before the thyroid can't keep up any more - this is fairly common. However, it's also scary for docs to consider supplementing you with thyroid hormone when you're hyper - hyperthryoidism is generally more dangerous than being hypo, and you had clear hyper symptoms. I think it's good you stopped the Tapazole though and did not do the radioactive iodine - in some cases these things may be necessary but I hear a lot how these things can complicate thyroid regulation later on. At this point you need to find a doc who will explore different options and treat by your symptoms, not your tests. You don't necessarily need dessicated thyroid if you have Hashis (and you clearly do have Hashis) - some of us take it and others, like me, take T4 only (I'm on Levoxyl). But docs who are willing to prescribe dessicated thyroid are generally more open to exploring options. Whichever formulation you and your doc choose, I would start on a 1/2 pill of the lowest dosage possible and titrate up when you see that your body can tolerate it. For some people who swing hyper, they actually need thyroid hormone supplementation so the body will stabilize and stop trying to fix the hormone problem itself. In the mean time, before you are on thyroid hormone you can try supplementing with selenium (or eat Brazil nuts). Don't exceed the recommended daily dosage, but it can give your thyroid a boost. Iodine also helps some people - others it can make things worse, so that's a tricky one. I would cut out all soy and goitrogenic veggies until you get your thyroid regulated. Try to stay off caffeine and eat healthy, exercise (especially strength-building). Hope this helps a little. > > > > > > I'm in desperate need of help. Guest guest
Hi, I would just like to recommend thyroid-dr.com. Dr Labbe is a holistic dr and will look at the whole picture. She is out of California, I am in Nevada and I do all my appointments over the phone! I'm very impressed with her work and knowledge! And I'm very glad to be working with her, many things have improved for me. I also recommend reading dr. Kharrazian's book: "why do I still have thyroid symptoms when my lab tests are normal!" Dr. Labbe practices a lot of what he preaches. Hashi's is so difficult to understand, I have found that in my journey, there seems to be no absolute "right" path to follow! Good Luck, :)Sent from my iPhone I'm in desperate need of help. I've been diagnosed with everything from hyper to Hashi's. Guest guest
Your history looks much like mine! I'm so sorry you are going through all of this! I know how awful it is and how frusterating it is on knowing who to believe- which doctor to trust...ugh. I think you are hypo now as your blood levels look like they are...and you have the symptoms. If you are hashis then your TSH should be under 1...so it's actually not "normal". I take the natural dessicated thyroid and my doc keeps my TSH around .75 to .90...I know TSH is not the end all test, as we all do, but it sounds like you need some meds. Luckily my doctor's wife is hypo, so he understands a tad bit more about it (and was willing to try the NDT when my endochronologist wasn't).Best of luck! Guest guest
Thank you so much for taking the time to respond to me! This has definitely been a very frustrating journey. I really feel like both my regular doctor and current endo completely ignore how I feel and just look for the test results to be in the normal range. I have found several doctor recommendations in the Dallas area that are supposed to be really good about treating the symptoms and not the lab results, but most of them don't accept insurance. Before I spend possibly hundred of dollars, I wanted to come on here first and get some opinions. I'm definitely going to try the selenium, thank you for the recommendation! I definitely don't want to do anything that can make the hyper symptoms come back. The tachycardia was scary. Once again, thank you for the recommendations. I will also try cutting out soy and goitrogenic vegetables (I didn't realize those could affect it). > > > > > > > > I'm in desperate need of help. Guest guest
See, that's the problem, unless the doctor was giving me meds that made me feel like I had been run over by a bus or was recommending killing off my entire thyroid just to replace it's function with meds for the rest of my life, I never really thought to question them. Since my results were in the normal range, I thought everything must be normal. None of these doctors told me that my results should actually be much different and they were just ignoring my symptoms. I couldn't understand why I still don't feel good. I'm so glad I started digging further and have found some recommendations for doctors that will actually listen. > > > Your history looks much like mine! Guest guest
There is no one list that suits all. Your testing in Aug 2005 looks the most complete, except for TBII to rule out Graves, and possibly Thyroglobulin Antibodies and TBAb just for more info on antibodies you might have to see what's going on. Note that docs will resist running these every time (many are pricey - the TSH is cheap), but until you know what the heck is going on I would want them all checked out, and your adrenals too. Your TPO results mean you have Hashis, and that number is not likely to drop down to normal range again. Why they didn't test you earlier for Hashis I don't know. Oh, and especially if you're having digestive issues, I definitely second cutting out gluten (completely - educate yourself, see our Files and Links section for resources). > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > I'm in desperate need of help.
