Yes, anything given in large amounts can be bad for you, including water, for goodness' sake, but probiotics have a very good safety record. I checked just now for adverse reactions and found that yes, some people have had adverse reactions, but usually those only occur in people with severely compromised immune systems -- patients who were very seriously ill to begin with. The risks you describe below are theoretical. You may find this article from the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition interesting (http://www.ajcn.org/cgi/content/full/83/6/1256). They advocate a cautious approach, but also (and this was in 2006, not that long ago) state that there are no known cases of sepsis caused by probiotics taken by otherwise healthy people. Of course, it's always a good idea to check with your doctor before taking anything, but I would check with a doctor who is familiar with probiotics and prescribes them regularly, like a chiropractor.

Although you may not be able to overdose on them, they do affect the nervous system which controls the body..................just like anything, given in large amounts has to affect you in some way?

Probiotics' side effects, if they occur, tend to be mild and digestive (such as gas or bloating). More serious effects have been seen in some people. Probiotics might theoretically cause infections that need to be treated with antibiotics, especially in people with underlying health conditions. They could also cause unhealthy metabolic activities, too much stimulation of the immune system, or gene transfer (insertion of genetic material into a cell).

I'm not against them Bonnie, I'm just saying one shouldn't give someone a cup of espresso before trying a cup of coffee first.................

Boy our son sure reacted to them. He became very aggressive etc. We realized it was to much for him. There has got to be balance, even good things can mess things up. I have seen many reports from parents stating there child became very hyper or aggressive with to much probiotics. It obviously can affect the neuro systom(the gi/brain are neuro linked)Jennie<><

Hi Marg, from what I understand from other groups is that after gi surgery, very loose stools seems to be normal. Apparently it takes the intestines time to adjust. I have been reading from other groups of still having this loose stool issue months later with some. I cant even imagine this being a problem with my son once he has surgery, but can be quite a problem from what others say. Did your surgeon say how long this well occur for you? Jennie<><
