I have not posted in a while. I had decompression surgery in May. I

am in physical therapy right now and i have been getting some increased

headaches. Neurologist wants to put me on amitriptyline. Has anybody

taken this for headaches. Also does anybody know an approximate time

when some of the muscle spasms in neck subside.

Kathleen's response:

I've taken amitriptyline which is an anti-depressant. Our brain produces

endorphins, a chemical that helps us deal with both mental and physical

pain. The amitriptyline helps replace some of those endorphins and helps

with the physical pain.

It also made my mouth really dry (drink water or sugar free drinks), and it

also made me love my cookie jar. I was starved for sweets. I would wake up

first thing in the morning and grab a cookie. Have some sugar free snacks on

hand and it helps.

It worked for me, especially with the combo of that and a beta-blocker for

about 3 years. When that didn't work anymore we switched to nortriptyline,

another anti-depressant.
