Guest guest
Kim, what you are explaining is called "failure to thrive" and is written all over the FDA adverse reactions.................the nausea is sad, can't imagine how sick these kids must feel on this cr_ _ ................I'm glad he's off and feeling better.............keep us posted, thanks Subject: Off Miralax and loving itTo: miralax Date: Thursday, January 8, 2009, 1:10 PM Hi - my 9 year old son had been on Miralax for 11 months, during which time he backed up 3 times and had to undergo many xrays and clean outs. It made him so flatulent that the kids at school called him Fart Boy. Participation in sports went down because he never felt well enough, and this is a kid who's father was a college football player. He has a genius IQ but did not make it into the gifted program at school because he spent half of the time the test was given in the bathroom cramping up thanks to the Miralax. An endoscopy showed no motility problems, no lactose intolerance, and no celiac's disease (or gluten sensitivity) , but he did have eosinophilic esophagitis, which wasn't surprising because he's a nut allergic kid. He never ingests nuts, but it still wasn't surprising. The GI wanted him to stay on Miralax, take Zantac at night and Prevacid in the morning. I added the Zantac and Prevacid as directed, but immediately stopped the Miralax cold turkey since there was clearly no physical cause for his constipation and no reason to continue. In the 14 days since stopping it, he has pooped 14 times. I upped his fiber intake easily by adding one single serving packet of Benefiber to diet root beer that he likes to drink two times a day. He drinks a combination of plum juice (3g per 8 oz) and white grape juice, and is now as regular as clock work. I am so happy to have him off of that drug. He is now HUNGRY a lot of the time which he NEVER was on Miralax. He requests second helpings now which almost makes me cry because it was such a struggle to get him to eat anything while on the Miralax. He was skinny to begin with and was literally wasting away before our eyes. He basically lost weight over the course of the year he was on Miralax.Just wanted to share a success story that would never have happened without being on this group, and learning about the delay in gastric emptying that Miralax causes, the lack of efficacy after 30 days, and the increased absorption in constipated kids. Thanks to everyone who helped us.
Guest guest
Jeanie - Many kids are diagnosed with " failure to thrive " who have NEVER taken Miralax. I totally understand that you and many others feel that your child has been injured by this drug and I feel for each of you. I do believe the possibility of EG toxicity and oxalate issues is a plausible concept. I also think it is a travesty that Miralax is being used so freely and carelessly in children by mainstream medical practitioners. I am thankful every day that my kids never got the stuff despite it being 'prescribed' for them. But please realize that not everyone who joins this group has used Miralax for their children and not every issue that the children of parents here may have been diagnosed with can be traced to Miralax. We should all remember that our children had constipation prior to any treatment (Miralax or other). Thus, they had *something* physiologically going wrong well before receiving Miralax or other drug. Until that issue(s) is addressed one cannot know what effect the underlying cause of the constipation was having and what effect the Miralax may have exacerbated or caused. best, > > > Subject: Off Miralax and loving it > To: miralax > Date: Thursday, January 8, 2009, 1:10 PM > > > > > > > Hi - my 9 year old son had been on Miralax for 11 months, during > which time he backed up 3 times and had to undergo many xrays and > clean outs. Guest guest
, she clearly stated her child was Miralax for 11 months and described what happened to him.............I was simply pointing out, for her knowledge, that she isn't the first person to describe what was happening to her son. People cannot know that their child's symptoms could be coming from a medication if there doctors don't know a thing about what they're prescibing and it's not on the label....................That's why you can obtain the Freedom of Information Act AERS reporting system to find out..............There are so many Ah...ha moments on here and so many connections just from everyone talking to each other finding out they all are having the same side affects. Guest guest
I realize this may be a touchy issue on this board but my kids have used Miralax on/off for about a year at one point with no noticeable side effects. I am mostly a lurker but thought it should be known the Miralax ultimately was " successful " for us (while on it) but I wasn't going to keep them on it forever. > > > > From: Kim <ktjackson421@> > > Subject: Off Miralax and loving it > > To: miralax > > Date: Thursday, January 8, 2009, 1:10 PM > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Hi - my 9 year old son had been on Miralax for 11 months, during > > which time he backed up 3 times and had to undergo many xrays and > > clean outs. Guest guest
Constipation didn't cause my sons failure to thrive. Miralax did. This was basically proven by the endoscopy and MRI showing nothing wrong yet the doctor continued to push the miralax. The only thing he lacked was fiber. And because I wasted a year of his life on Miralax, he has to rebuild his immune system and try to regain his weight and place on the growth chart!Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerryFrom: jeanie ward Date: Thu, 8 Jan 2009 20:05:34 -0800 (PST)To: <miralax >Subject: Re: Re: Off Miralax and loving it , she clearly stated her child was Miralax for 11 months and described what happened to him.............I was simply pointing out, for her knowledge, that she isn't the first person to describe what was happening to her son. Guest guest
you know ..........I really take offense to this reply because she had her child on Miralax for 11 months, complaining of symptoms of failure to thrive, I remembered seeing it posted on the FDA sheets and informed her of this..............I think you overstepped your boundaries there.............. Because you've never had your children on Miralax, you may not realize the severity of the the symptoms like the extreme gas they develop, that she was complaining about and the many other symptoms it causes. This is alarming to me and I take it very seriously. I'm searching for more people with the same symptoms and I don't appreciate it when it's made a game of...........I feel terrible about what happened to these children, especially mine, and I'm looking for answers as MOST of the people are trying to do on here.................. I can't make the FDA move any faster in making them investigate this situation to make the proper label changes, but I can offer information I have found to help people make the right decisions................ Guest guest
Some problems are suttle and they well surely have issues once they try to take them off of the PEG. That is a big problem with miralax, causes desenstizing(sp), they well need more and more and getting off is a nightmare. PEG has been found to bind/coat nerve cells in animals and im sure this would be a serious issue with humans also. Some show adverse signs quicker due to pre exsisting gut issues like mal absorb etc. With the healthier guts it well be more suttle/take longer to show symtoms. PEG is not ment for humans what so ever. It is in the cellular level of antifreeze!!! The main warning from the manufactuor is not to use with kidney issues. Antifreeze is well known for damaging the kidneys! Guest guest
Jeanie, I was not trying to offend you in any way. I do feel you are (rightfully) angry about Miralax and what problems it may have caused for your and other children. I feel that you are sometimes too anxious to blame everything on Miralax and that can scare or frighten (or cause feelings of guilt in) the new parents that join this group. I wouldn't have spent so many sleepless nights since joining this group researching this topic and trying to figure out just *how* Miralax could be causing these possible problems if it weren't for my heart going out to the children and parents who were affected. I wouldn't have spent hours contacting research scientists around the world to ask questions about this stuff. I wouldn't have contacted you, Merry (this list's moderator), Owens, and others in this group personally and individually about this PEG breakdown into EG hypothesis a long time ago. You can ask my husband about how many times he has found me up at 4am still sifting through research abstracts and emailing scientists trying to find answers. You yourself have said not long ago what a " godsend " I have been to this group. I did all this because I was so appreciative of finding this group BEFORE using Miralax AND because my heart went out to you all who have used Miralax and are trying to get to the bottom of this. I just feel, and I have said this before, that if you want to make a case for the possible damage by Miralax, you need to be much more scientific in the approach. I am a trained scientist, I taught medical students, and did my PhD research in a medical school environment. I *know* how mainstream science and mainstream medical personnel think. I *know* that throwing a lot of emotion and anectdotal information at them is not going to do anything but make the case _less_ credible. SO, if you were offended, I apologize. But my intent was, and always has been with this group, to help. best, > > > > From: Kim <ktjackson421@ ...> > > Subject: Off Miralax and loving it > > To: miralax@yahoogroups .com > > Date: Thursday, January 8, 2009, 1:10 PM > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Hi - my 9 year old son had been on Miralax for 11 months, during > > which time he backed up 3 times and had to undergo many xrays and > > clean outs. Guest guest
Speaking of experience...I have been in the "mainstream" medical field for many-many-many years. Doctors are not given enough information about new medications, nor do they take the time to do the research. They get most of their information from marketing representatives who really don't know ANYTHING about them either. Aggressive marketing technique and big pharma money get these products out there before they are completely tested. Whether prescription or OTC, not enough time is given in some cases and we (or our children in this case) are often the guinea pigs. IMHO, emotion does not make things less credible. This raw emotion and critical thinking is what is lacking in today's medicine. You would like to believe that when you make a trip to the doctor's office, you would be able to get well rounded health information. However, this can never be unless you have done your own research. There is hardly a proactive approach, but mostly reactive. I'm touched by the sharing/caring of this group and many others like it. While most have given up and trust big pharma/mainstream medical to do the right thing, I can give you many reasons why this is not the best thing to do. This is why groups such as this form and there must always be multiple sources to provide independent information. We can't help each other in the true sense of community without sharing all information and opinion. Guest guest
BTW - I know what it is like for my child to suffer - that is what has led me on this odyssey just like all of the other parents here. My son had also suffered from extremely painful gas and bloating, oxalate symptoms (painful, burning pooping, penis pain, crystals in urine), red irritated anus, and rashes on his bottom. Countless children at these online support groups suffer from these and other symptoms in common with the children here (see, e.g., the Trying Low Oxalates group or the Vitamin K group) - yet haven't been on Miralax. I empahasize that I am NOT trying to belittle your or anyone else's child's experiences. NOR am I trying to say that Miralax had no part in the symptoms anyone else's children has experienced. > > > > > > From: Kim <ktjackson421@ ...> > > > Subject: Off Miralax and loving it > > > To: miralax@yahoogroups .com > > > Date: Thursday, January 8, 2009, 1:10 PM > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Hi - my 9 year old son had been on Miralax for 11 months, during > > > which time he backed up 3 times and had to undergo many xrays and > > > clean outs. Guest guest
Well stated. After all my experiences over the last 6 years, I am seriously considering going back to school and get an ND certification. I want to get this information out to people -- try a natural solution first -- the pharmaceutical solution should be your last resort because the risk of side effects is much larger than a natural solution. Why the blanket statement? I believe this is because of the simple theory of evolution. Our bodies are being bombarded by new chemicals everyday. It takes a generation or two (minimum) for us to evolve with a response to a stimulous. In the meantime, the body responds by socking the unknown molecules where it knows best -- in the liver, pancreas and intestines. Guest guest
I've thought about doing an ND degree too...but it sure is expensive and time consuming. It's the same thing, essentially, as deciding suddenly that you're going to go to medical school. In my case, I would have to go back to college first and make up some science classes...but good luck, I hope you do it! Bonnie Well stated. Guest guest
a, I think my post below was, at least in part, perhaps misinterpreted. I was not advocating for the pharmaceutical industry or mainstream medicine. I left the pharmaceutical industry because I couldn't stand their philosophies and the fact that the main drive was always focused on money and covering their butts. I did not return to academics and research because I had already observed too much inappropriate conduct and bad science. I do not vaccinate my children and rarely so much as give them Tylenol because I believe in natural and preventative approaches over anything modern medicine has to offer. I was simply trying to point out that the people who created Miralax are in the pharmaceutical industry. The people who tell us Miralax is perfectly safe are mainstream researchers and mainstream physicians. These people are all content in believing in this drug and the money they are making off it hand over fist. In my opinion, in order to get their attention, one needs to think from their perspective. If I had it to do all over again – I would've taken my undergrad science education and gone on to naturopathy school instead of pursuing a graduate degree in biomedical research science. Hindsight is 20/20. Like LeeAnn, I consider going back to school to get an ND degree – and hope that when the time is right for my kids and family that I can go on to do it. best, > > > > > > From: Kim <ktjackson421@ ...> > > > Subject: Off Miralax and loving it > > > To: miralax@yahoogroups .com > > > Date: Thursday, January 8, 2009, 1:10 PM > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Hi - my 9 year old son had been on Miralax for 11 months, during > > > which time he backed up 3 times and had to undergo many xrays and > > > clean outs. Guest guest
LeeAnn - I hope you can get back to school - though I know the self-education you've received in this journey to help you son has, at the very least, prepared you well for that endeavor, and in fact, if one could just run off and take an exam to get that degree - I imagine you would pass with flying colors. The information and advice you have shared over the years has been truly invaluable and led me down a great number of useful paths & I appreciate that. best, > > > > > > > > From: Kim <ktjackson421@ ...> > > > > Subject: Off Miralax and loving it > > > > To: miralax@yahoogroups .com > > > > Date: Thursday, January 8, 2009, 1:10 PM > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Hi - my 9 year old son had been on Miralax for 11 months, > during > > > > which time he backed up 3 times and had to undergo many > xrays and > > > > clean outs. Guest guest
I'd like to add that my daughter who was on Miralax for about a year and has been off of it for a couple of weeks has had an increase in appetite ever since we stopped the Miralax. We added the Natural Calm but have not changed anything else in her diet. She is eating much better and has even gained a pound which is wonderful because she is underweight (below average). SimonaTo: miralax Sent: Thursday, January 8, 2009 8:05:34 PMSubject: Re: Re: Off Miralax and loving it , she clearly stated her child was Miralax for 11 months and described what happened to him......... .....I was simply pointing out, for her knowledge, that she isn't the first person to describe what was happening to her son. People cannot know that their child's symptoms could be coming from a medication if there doctors don't know a thing about what they're prescibing and it's not on the label....... ......... ....That' s why you can obtain the Freedom of Information Act AERS reporting system to find out......... .....There are so many Ah...ha moments on here and so many connections just from everyone talking to each other finding out they all are having the same side affects. I totally understand that you and many others feel that yourchild has been injured by this drug and I feel for each of you. I dobelieve the possibility of EG toxicity and oxalate issues is aplausible concept. I also think it is a travesty that Miralax isbeing used so freely and carelessly in children by mainstream medicalpractitioners. I am thankful every day that my kids never got thestuff despite it being 'prescribed' for them. But please realize that not everyone who joins this group has usedMiralax for their children and not every issue that the children ofparents here may have been diagnosed with can be traced to Miralax. We should all remember that our children had constipation prior to anytreatment (Miralax or other). Thus, they had *something*physiologically going wrong well before receiving Miralax or otherdrug. Until that issue(s) is addressed one cannot know what effectthe underlying cause of the constipation was having and what effectthe Miralax may have exacerbated or caused. best,> > From: Kim <ktjackson421@ ...>> Subject: Off Miralax and loving it> To: miralax@yahoogroups .com> Date: Thursday, January 8, 2009, 1:10 PM> > > > > > > Hi - my 9 year old son had been on Miralax for 11 months, during > which time he backed up 3 times and had to undergo many xrays and > clean outs..
