Guest guest
, I thought that thyroid peroxidase was used in the thyroid as part of the process of making thyroid hormones? " Inorganic iodine enters the body primarily as iodide, I-. After entering the thyroid follicle (or thyroid follicular cell) via a Na+/I- symporter (NIS) on the basolateral side, iodide is shuttled across the apical membrane into the colloid via pendrin, after which thyroid peroxidase oxidizes iodide to atomic iodine (I) or iodinium (I+). The " organification of iodine, " the incorporation of iodine into thyroglobulin for the production of thyroid hormone, is nonspecific; that is, there is no TPO-bound intermediate, but iodination occurs via reactive iodine species released from TPO.[3] The chemical reactions catalyzed by thyroid peroxidase occur on the outer apical membrane surface and are mediated by hydrogen peroxide. " http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thyroid_peroxidase It is the deiodinases (D1, D2 and D3) that are involved in converting T4 to T3 (and various other processes). (And yes, it can be confusing that " Three types of iodothyronine deiodinases (D1, D2, D3) have been identified in vertebrates which differ in tissue distribution, substrate specificity and sensitivity to inhibiting compounds (83). D1 and D2 catalyze primarily the removal of one iodide from the outer tyrosine ring of T4 to produce T3. D3 catalyzes the cleaving of one iodide from the inner tyrosine rings of T4 and T3 generating inactive iodothyronine derivatives (e.g. reverse T3 and diiodothyronines), respectively. " http://www.thyroidmanager.org/Chapter1/1-frame.htm Also, Figure 1 in this paper is a nice diagram of what D1, D2 and D3 can do. http://www.jci.org/articles/view/29812 If by some chance I am right, you might care to find an integrative doctor who integrates real understanding.
