Guest guest
Pamela, I've never had a discogram, but am somewhat familiar with them. They are quite different from lumbar punctures, which are painful due to the puncture, but at least for me the horrible pain often comes from getting a CSF leak (which I get every single time and I've had over 20 LPs). But from what I can tell about a Discogram, you are at a much lower risk for a CSF leak, but it does look like it has the potential to be a painful procedure, both during and after. It seems like the purpose of the test is to determine which disc(s) is actually causing the symptoms since other tests can sometimes be deceiving as the disc that is most herniated on a regular scan may or may not be the one that is the most damaged and causing the symptoms and pain. So, if you are considering any sort of spinal surgery for a disc problem and your doctor has recommended it (and you are comfortable with your doctor and their recommendations), it seems like it may be informative and necessary, but certainly not comfortable. I would definitely ask your physician if this is the only test that can ascertain what they are looking for, or if there is a less invasive option. Although, my hunch is that if they are recommending this there isn't a less invasive option available. Best wishes, and I'm sorry you're going through this!
