Subject: Side effects?

Hi Everyone

I have treated two patients - with different PC who appear to have reacted to

herbs in a similar manner i.e. with a swollen tongue and a 'burning' sensation

in their mouth & I wondered if anyone could shed some light on such a reaction.

The similarites I can see are some concerns re liver function & the use of

Matricaria & Agrimonia in prescriptions.

The first patient is a 63 year old lady who has several food & environmental

allergies. PC is primarily fatigue. A recent blood test revealed high levels of

GGT - (she is & always has been tee-total).I have been treating her for a year

with various prescriptions her symptoms seem to remitt & relaspe. Her

prescription has been composed mainly of digestive remedies (Matricaria,

Agrimonia, Silybum, Chionauthus) , adaptogens (Schizandra, Eleutherococus) &

Immune tonics (Echinacea)

The second lady is 54. PC residual chest infection (despite numerous courses of

anti-biotics) which has left her with tightness in her chest & an occasionally

productive, early morning cough. 19 years ago (after seperation from husband)

she drank heavily & was admitted to hospital after a paracetamol overdose.

Prescrition: Inula, Thymus, Plantago, Hydrastis, Gingko, Matricaria, Agrimonia.

Any insights would be most helpful -i'd really like to learn from this.

Kind regards

Hi Many,

I had a few people reacting to Echinacea (ski rash) and one person to chamomile

- compositeae plants are more likely than others to cause allergies. I also

personally experienced a noticable change to oral mucosa after largish dosages

of hydrastis (for chest infection) - it felt as if you rinsed the mouth with

astringent herbs - it has come back to normal within a few days of stopping

the mix.

Hope it helps
