Sad. So sad.

Disheartening news confirmed by a second person. These medical team members have worked in two different states working in a group home for teens, young adults who are mentally challenged. They both report that Miralax is given to all residents. They also report that aggressive behavior is a problem.

When are we going to acknowledge and that our most vulnerable populations are the ones receiving this harmful medication???

This practice has to STOP!

Do you think they're doing this to keep them on a schedule - programming their bathroom needs because they can't always communicate them? There has to be a better way. Carol

I used to be the Director of groups homes for cognitively disabled, deaf people (ages ranging from 18-52). We never had them on this drug because it wasn't available then and we never had problems communicating with them about their bathroom needs or getting them to go. We made sure their diet was exceptionally healthy and gave them plenty of outdoor physical outings. And we were federally funded program! Using Miralax for communication needs would be a cop-out; lazy and unnecessary. If they're using it to program their bathroom needs would constitute abuse from the laws I had to follow. I hope that's not why they're using it.

Good to know that would be illegal. Are there meds many are on today that would cause constipation?

That would most likely be the reason for the use of Miralax. Many psychotropic meds (used for the control of severe behaviors), pain meds or other "downers" cause constipation. One drug always leads to another....

For sure. When we contacted Dr. Breggin about our petition - he's the one who got black box warnings on antidepressants - he couldn't help us because he doesn't work in this class of drugs, but his first reponse was to watch how many psych drugs will be prescribed if peg is causing these adverse events.
