knowing what your child has gone through would you have chosen to abort them due to their autism, and what they and your family has gone through. knowing who they are NOW, would you have regreted aborting them???

it's still a hard choice, and i PRAY they never find the gentic marker to make this an option for parents with autistic kids.,

You are right, it's not the same. It means SHE can give the say-so

about when she sees her kids. She can work from home, take them with

her, etc. If she takes a break to nurse/pump (not even sure if she

does breastfeed) ain't no one gonna tell her no. It's a lot different

than lower-paying, lower-status jobs where moms have no say-so.

Hmmm, the 13th amendment was added to the constitution to solidify the Emancipation proclamation and abolished slavery and illegal servitude. I just find it hard to connect it to Roe v Wade unless the point is that the slaves who were raped should have had that Choice during that time.

Extremely OT (AGAIN.......): Being a taxpaying, volunteer, servant and an American, it really gets under my skin that the Voting Rights Act has to be resigned to enforce the Amendments added under Reconstruction. How backwards is it that you have to have an ACT to enforce Amendments that pretty much say you can't enslave me and you have to let me vote? Again, I know this is extremely off-topic but as soon as I thought of Reconstruction, I started thinking of everything else. Sorry for the RANT.

Why is it ok to give women the choice to kill their baby. Regardless of how it happens, is it fair to the baby that his/her rights are taken away to live. When they amended the constitution so that there would be no more slavery, they were giving rights back to all people. I agree with you on one point: Once these bills are signed, we can't expect our representatives to remember everything. After the bills are passed, it is up to us to keep the Bill in the forefront of our representatives and our President's mind.

My concern is that if you are voting against increased medical funding for uninsured children, you are voting no to bills that will help families involved in Bankruptcy due to Medical Hardship, what makes me think you will all of sudden want to help my child?

Totally agree Christel! We have a little girl at our ABA center whose DAD takes her to therapy and totes along her 8 month old little sister while MOM works all day. Does this mean this little girl's mom is a bad "special needs" parent? Who am I to tell them what is right for their family? That's exactly the point, you don't have any idea how " active " she is

in any of her kids lives. None of us do about any of the candidates.

I guess Obama is excused from being a good father because his kids

are " normal. " What a weird argument!

I have no problems with all of these debates on autism policies and

politics between all the candidates, in fact I rather enjoy them. I

would just like the self-righteous, superior " I am a BETTER Special

Needs Mom than she is! " posts to die a quick death. Enough of that

Whoa, whoa ...... slow down. You have SSI???? How did you manage that because I have been turned down 4 times for SSI and 3 times for the Deeming Waiver.

So, for those of us that do not have those options, what should we do when it comes to taxes? I am an independant contractor and have to get individual insurance BUT they will not cover my child due to her preexisting conditions so we have Basic Medicaid which does not cover any of my daughter's therapies. Please tell me how to write-off the $32,000 that I will have spent by the end of this year because I would appreciate any input.

(Note: I itemized and still paid out the you know what in taxes.)

Hmm.... this is such a touchy subject on both sides. Is it fair to demand that a 13-year old girl be forced to carry and then give birth because she was raped by a relative? No personal experience here, thank God, but in theory, the girl suffers more than she needed to.

wow you must make alot then. yes autism falls under ssi, they didn't even make me do it more then once, have you pulled a laywer in on it? is your child very effected? at the time we applied our son was at intitutional state. so we get 414.50 every 2 months and 24.50 on the 3rd month due to getting paid weekly, we have no savings, so IRA's, nothing.....no assets of 2000 plus ect. this qualifies us for state insurence which I use for titer testing, cbc to monitor things, PANDAS testing, and finding a dr that WILL take what I have to use what I can and code things right to get us help. then we take in what we spend on all our medical stuff and they take that off our income and qualify for food stamps getting us 650 a month for that which pays for his diet stuff. or we would have filed bankrupsy years ago....we sold our home to pay some back med bills we ran up on the credit cards and moved into our parents basement for 14 months to get back on our feet and are now at the same place that our credit cards are maxed.....making it pay check to paycheck and sometimes picking up change between seat cushions to make it. we take all that money around 20 thousand a year and itemize it (we only make 42,000) and then we get money back each time, we haven't had to pay taxes since our son was dxed because 1/2 our income goes to his needs

This is just last minute string pulling... if they had intentions of doing so... it would have been on their original proposals!!! Specially from Palling being a "special needs mother"... which there is nothing special about her... she has money and resources to have her child taken care off... she is too busy working... in her case she is more of a special needs nanny owner!!! She does not struggle like we do to stretch out our incomes...so she really does not understand us at all!!! That is just my 2 cents!!! Anything any of the candidates throw in at last minute to change votes, is as good as NOT GONNA HAPPEN!!! We have seen it before, and all she is to this campaign is playing the WOMAN CARD, just to top Obama's team playing the minority card!!!

Hmm.... this is such a touchy subject on both sides. Is it fair to demand that a 13-year old girl be forced to carry and then give birth because she was raped by a relative? No personal experience here, thank God, but in theory, the girl suffers more than she needed to.

i actually was working with a girl like this, this year....yes the 13 year old is inocent, but so is the child, doing counciling got her through it, and then the baby was going to be adopted out. best for both parties

I give her credit for being a mom of a special needs child, and CHOOSEING to be that, when she didn't have to. I give her credit for going to bat for our kids and even BRINGING them into the debates, media, masses, mentioning our struggels on TV about insurence, education and nedding help.....

We didn't (don't) have any savings, 401k, stocks or anything else. We fell within the income level required-well within. And we were behind on our mortgage as well. We literally had nothing. That's why I was wondering if this really is policy when they don't ask that info on the application. If we were ever in that situation again I would want to know if I could fight it. The worker seemed to have an attitude and I know our town is known as being more afflent than most in the area. But that doesn't mean all the people are! I was just wondering if anyone else had this happen because I know others said they had received SSI or medicaid. Hopefully, I won't have to worry about it again, but I never thought I would be in that position so I know we never can tell.

You have entered a topic that has nothing to do with your original

posts, more than a little off track. My comment wasn't directed at

YOU particularly, sorry if you took it that way. No one has any

business telling anyone they need to focus on their family more,

whether they are running for public office or not. She apparently has

a husband sent from up above, and an enormous support system. I don't

have that and can't imagine what it's like. I can't randomly look at

a high powered working mother and automatically assume I know her and

her life and what is best for all of them. No one does, that is the

only point I am making.

And yeah, her pregnant 17-year-old has nothing to do with anything. I

am glad my mother was not crucified for every mistake I made when I

was a teenager, regardless of how she raised me. If I became pregnant

at that age my mom wouldn't quit her job either. And in many parts of

the country, in many families and many religions, the older children

DO " pick up the slack, " as you say, which is not seen as a burden but

a blessing. Just shows that we are not all alike and do not all

believe the same things about families.

We can disagree without getting personal about each other.

That is unbelievably nasty.

You don't think she has done a good job with her " existing children " ?

Why, because her 17 year old is pregnant? When your children get

older, teen years, you will learn that you can raise them the best

you can, you can be there 24/7, you can do homework with them, love

them, go to PTA meetings, learn who their friends are, encourage

them, support them, etc.... and STILL they are free people who do as

they choose. Part of growing up is making bad decisions for yourself

and learning from them.

I had premarital sex and almost became pregnant at the age of 17 as

well. I come from a middle class, college educated, Christian family

with a father in politics who does not approve of this behavior. I

went to church every week with them, listened on what NOT to do. I

did it anyways. So unless you are willing to imply that my mom is

also a poor mother as well I would leave it alone.

I absolutely agree with you. They want you completely at "rock bottom" so they can then think about whether they'll approve this or that service for you.

Parents who really care about their kids really get such a hard time in this country. From what I see, parents who don't give a rat's (you know what) about their child get all the benefits in the world!!!! I see this time and time again. I don't want special attention from my state, I just want fairness.

I think it varies state to state. I've had some here tell me there is

no way we should have been turned down. But I also think some don't

realize that there are limitations. It's almost like (in my state)

since they got approved everyone should get approved. In our state it

is income-based period. In other states it may not be, which leads to

the confusion because we don't know how each of the other 49 differ

from our own.

Seems like they did ask about our vehicles. But my van has 190,000,

husband's truck is teetering on 300,000. Maybe they were so old they

weren't considered.

Here is a webpage that explains deeming of parents income. They should not

count all of the parents income. This is stated at the end of the webpage. From what

I have learned ( could be wrong ) but some assets are counted. Some of a parents income

is counted but usually not all as a parents income is not all just for taking care of this

one child. I believe they cut the income in half also. Hope this helps

a " special needs mother " ... which there is nothing special about

her... she has money and resources to have her child taken care

off... she is too busy working... in her case she is more of a

special needs nanny owner!!! She does not struggle like we do to

stretch out our incomes...so she really does not understand us at

all!!! That is just my 2 cents!!! Anything any of the candidates

throw in at last minute to change votes, is as good as NOT GONNA

HAPPEN!!! We have seen it before, and all she is to this campaign is

playing the WOMAN CARD, just to top Obama's team playing the

minority card!!!

In GA, there are about 5 or 6 SSI forms to fill out; the form I had was for Child with Disability. Believe me, I questioned everyone and everyone said the same thing: in GA, SSI is income based.

Yesterday, I emailed a parent whose child was at the Marcus Institute with Iman was there (for her 10-day clinic) and asked her about SSI because I remember her mentioning that she received it. I knew that her son went to the Marcus full-time and Medicaid pays for it thru a Grant with Marcus but she also told me that she doesn't work.

My brother received SSI (before he passed) and I asked my Mom how she managed that because I remember that she worked. She said she did work but it was under the table; she did daycare, waitressing, etc.

'One of the most frustrating situations for parents of children with disabilities is the income limit imposed for qualification of Supplemental Security Income (SSI). The Deeming Waiver is a way for parents to get Medicaid for their child with a disability when their income is too high to qualify for SSI. This federal waiver takes the family income out of the picture and looks at the income/assets of the child. Even if a child has private insurance coverage, parents can apply for this waiver. Most private insurance policies have service limitations, out of pocket expenses, and lifetime caps. In cases where private insurance exists, the Deeming Waiver will be beneficial as secondary insurance to cover out of pocket expenses and will be helpful to have before a lifetime cap is met. As secondary coverage, Medicaid will pay for 20% of covered expenses that primary insurance does not pay. '
