Guest guest
Officials searching for mold source in Lyme-OL school By Florin - More Articles Published on 1/26/2001 Old Lyme ÐÐ With the majority of faculty members at Lyme-Old Lyme Midd= le School complaining of symptoms that could be caused by poor air quality, consultants are ripping out sections of wall to find the source of= mold and recommending replacement of the air-handling system. Recent air-quality tests indicate that at least two types of mold, pen= icillium and aspergillus, are growing inside the building. Crews ripped out = a wall in the school over the Christmas break and have probed the crawl space= and ceilings, but have not yet identified the exact source of the mold. Several faculty members have been diagnosed with asthma and use inhale= rs. Others have complained of eye irritation, headaches and fatigue. So far, there have been no student complaints, according to the Superintend= ent . " We're taking a very aggressive approach to this,'' said Klein. " We want to get to the bottom of this and discover what we have. " The IAQ consultant of Occupational Risk Control Services of New Britai= n, met with faculty Tuesday to discuss the problem and will meet with parents Feb. 1. A team has been assembled to address the problem, including the distri= ct's new facilities manager, the schools' consulting physician, and experts from the University of Connecticut Medical Center. We want to look at the symptoms of people suggesting they aren't feel= ing well and those who seem to be feeling fine,'' said Klein. " We want to look at their health individually and try to find out, if this is being cau= sed by the building, where is the source. " While most of the focus in the district has been on the Center School= 's mold and air-quality problem, the middle school, also an older building that had a leaky roof at one point, has long been a problem. The school is scheduled for renovation next fall as part of the distr= ict's $34 million building plan and officials say they are committed to maki= ng the building healthy. " We're willing to do what it takes, but I'm not sure what it takes r= ight now, " said the school board chairwoman . She said the district is being= proactive about the air-quality issues, with regularly scheduled testing an= d a plan to revamp all of the ventilation systems. The school's air-handling system was cleaned and repaired over the = summer, but the IAQ consultant has recommended it be replaced entirely. Crews will rip out another section of wall to look for the mold s= ource. It also has been recommended that staff keep windows open to allow for better circulation of fresh air and keep surfaces clear in classr= ooms so that custodians can clean more thoroughly. He also recommende replacing ceiling tiles damaged by leaks and removing wood chips from in fr= ont of the building.
