Guest guest
My oldest daughter has just been diagnosed with schizophrenia. My youngest has chiari I and syringomyelia, tethered cord and has had surgery for all. This question is for chip or anyone else who may know. Could this be related? At all? I think this is a very serious diagnoses for a beautiful, straight A, leads a normal life, 17 year old. She is not afraid of anything and can do anything. She had some obsessive, compulsive behavior and hears voices (she says since she was a little girl) Has alot of death thoughts and is very obsessed by it. The voices or impulses makes her do things. She is not worried because the things it makes her do are not bad. Like talking to a person she doesn't know. She feels if she doesn't do it something bad will happen. Anyway, This all probably sounds weird to everyone. I am just a wreck right now. Dealing with my younger daughters medical problems for the past three years. Now this! I think I am going nuts myself. There is much more she experiences that I did not mention cause of the length of this letter. I was reading on the net about schizophrenia and they say it has something to do in the brain with the fluid. Does anyone know or know anyone who may have experience some of these symptoms with chiari? I am going to have a mri done one way or the other just for my peace of mine. But would appreciate any advice, info, experiences that anyone can offer. Thanks so much ------------------------------------------------------------------------ eGroups.com home: /group/chiari - Simplifying group communications
Guest guest
Dear and all, As the old timers here know, this is a topic close to my heart. My daughter Roxanne has ACM/Sm and at the age of 14 was finally diagnosed with an " organic psychosis " , in laymans terms the same, but different to scizophrenia. Both her neurologist and psychiatrist both agree that the psychosis has been caused by either the ACM or the operations she has had to 'fix' the ACM. Psychotic behaviour can be caused by an increase in CSF pressure. Looking back at Roxanne's childhood she has had mild, on again, off again, symptoms of the psychotic episodes. Starting with anxiety and then deep depression etc. It is not uncommon for scizophrenics to have an enlarged fourth ventricle (yes, Rox has this, and it was the reason the dr. ordered the mri that lead to the Chiari diagnosis). Enlargement of the ventricles can be a sign of hydroenchephalus (sp?), which can also be caused by Chiari. I am not saying that because a diagnosis of schizophrenia has been made that there will be chiari, but I am saying in light of the family history, I would make damn sure an MRI was performed to rule any underlying cause out. Anyway, I will now get off my soapbox, but if you, or anyone else, would like to discuss this privately, please feel free to write to me at clarefam@... Debby Clare clarefam@... clarefam@...
