Dear Friends,

I have a real problem and I do not know what to do. My father broke

his hip in late August and had hip replacement surgery. He is eighty-

five but prior to his fall, he was fine mentally. He was reading

daily and doing crossword puzzles and knew everything that was going

on. He had no confusion and no sign of any dementia. When I saw him

after surgery, he was not sure of the day, year etc. The hospital

said that kind of thing happens to elderly people who have surgery

and have a long hospital stay and he would return to normal in a few

days.

As the weeks went on, he was more confused. My mother said that when

she saw him in the recovery room right after surgery, his right hand

had a tremor. He never had a tremor before that. I did not think much

about the tremor until I saw that he was not improving mentally. I

started to read about strokes and somehow I stumbled upon fat

embolisms. When I mentioned this at the hospital they said I found

information on the internet that was not applicable. I told them that

often oxygen therapy is used in this situation but that did not go

over well with them. I do not know if he had a stroke or a fat

embolism but something happened to him beyond the fall. He was too

cognitively sound before he fell to have just lapsed into this after

the fall.

Now, he is in rehab and is even more confused. He is just slipping

into something. He looks out the window and says he sees horses.

Today, he did not even know who I was.

If anyone has any ideas or any suggestions, I would welcome them

because I am really at a loss.

Thank you,

Dana
