Guest guest
For constipation due to opiods, here's a great natural recipe I picked up from a friend on another list that's been a life-saver. It's been published online by both Dr. Gott and by the Graedon's of the " People's Pharmacy " : Mix together: 1/2 cup applesauce 1/2 cup prune juice 1/2 cup bran (I use All-Bran) Use 1 to 2 large tablespoons, and wash down with plenty of water. It will keep in the fridge about one week. It may take a day or two to start " working, " and I sometimes take a couple of tablespoons both morning and night. I also sometimes add in a bit of ground ginger to taste, to give it a little spice and to help with gas. Also, you must use a stool softener, like ducosate sodium. Walgreens and other such places sell a store version that is less than half the price and just as good as the brand names. Just drink plenty of water with them. Finally, according to the American Journal of Gastroenterology, January 2005, it is a MYTH that the longterm use of stimulant laxatives like senna or biscodyl cause your colon to become lazy or cause nerve damage to it. The research shows that that is just an old wive's tale! We actually do worse damage to ourselves by not having the bowel movements than by using the laxatives we need, so don't be afraid to use the senna or biscodyl if you need it. Again, find the store brands rather than the brand names to save money! Good luck all - this stuff drives me nuts at times! I hate having to focus so much on my darn rear end! Guest guest
Is that the same stuff they give you just prior to a colonoscopy to clean the bowels? If so, that stuff is murder.... I get the chills just thinking about it. KT Jen wrote: KT, If your constipation gets too bad, where nothing seems to help, try Citroma. This was recommended to us by the local ER when my daughter got constipation so bad her bowels were starting to get impacted. It's liquid magnesium citrate, in an 8 oz bottle I believe. It comes in lemon lime and cherry, and you drink the whole bottle.

Guest guest
I have had trouble with this too. I take a wonderful supplement that is completely natural (to the best of my knowledge) called " glucomannan. " I have to order it from a website but I am not sure I can provide the link. I have tried many remedies but this is a bulk fiber suplement. I get it from a place called vitacost on the web. It also helps with cholesterol. No cramping and pain with it. I take it with meals and it helps a lot and doesn't interact with any medications. You can do a google search to read about it. It is also called konjacmannan. It is a Japanese herb that is the most dense form of fiber. I can't say enough good things about this supplement because I had a terrible time with this problem before I started this supplement. I've also had my gall bladder removed and had trouble with lingering pain that this has helped. I usually take one per day but sometimes I only need it every other day. Also, drink lots of water. Hope this helps. I know that this can be very frustrating. I used to have to stop my medicines long enough to go and this was very uncomfortable. Guest guest
Hi Cristina, This link sounds quite informative but unfortunately it only takes one to a log in page. Is there any way you could post the article in the body of an email? Received enema in hospital after 14 days without bowl movement. In March school raised concerns that the child was 'not right. The GP prescribed Mebendazol for worms and Terminafide hydrochloride for thrush.Mid April the child developed bruises and was hospitalised for a wk:low platelet count (12) and Immune thrombocytopenia diagnosed. A bone marrow test was normal but found to be low in iron and vit D. Liquid iron and Colecalciferol was prescribed. The child is in nappies as she dislikes a potty or toilet. She drinks or eats little and does not seem to have regular meals. The child was breastfed for 6 month with formula milk from birth until 1 yr, then cow's milk until 2 wks ago when homeopath advised to cut out dairy from her diet, which has not been consistently implemented. On abdominal examination I found a hard elongated mass in the RLQ and a smaller round on above pubis. I gave her Manna Fig syrup with tincture of Rumex, Tarax rad and Vib op, aromatic water of Anisum and Chionantus (for platelets). Also Slippery elm powder on food or with honey. Dietary advice also given and encouraged potty use. Compliance is going to be a problem. I have considered ice cubes of frozen herbal extracts, child dislikes jellies. I would be most grateful for any suggestions as regards to compliance, also herbs for constipation and to increase platelets. Has anybody come across these drugs and could there be a connection between any of the symptoms and drug side-effects or could there be an obstruction requiring urgent referral for an ultrasound or Xrays (have never been don so far).I am a bit lost wha5t the treatment strategy should be. Immediate BM is the parent's most urgent concern. Thanks in advance Elsa
