Tree,

Let me stand and virtually shake your hand for two reasons. First, for sharing

and " baring the soul. " Second, for quoting Forrest. You and Forrest are

correct. It does happen.

Folks, Tree is right. Prepare yourself as much as possible for anything you can

possibly dream up. If the bad folks on the streets can dream it up, you can

dream up possible counter measures. Take those classes, read those books, talk

to others (this list is the best for that. So much talent out there), play the

" what if " game, prepare...prepare...prepare.

Tree, I started out as an EMT back in 1971 when I got out of the serivce and had

the same feeling you did, save the world. Who the heck even knew what CIS was

back then. I wish we had some of the knowledge back then that we have now about

CIS. As far as Vietnam... well...understood " brother. "

Folks, you have to take care of yourself before you can take care of others. As

Tree said, if you don't have a CISM/CISD team, GET ONE! Start it yourself.

Take the classes, do the hard work of building the team, be there for yourself

and co-workers as you would for those that we serve. You think saving a life of

someone who has been traumatically injured physically is rewarding...you should

see how you feel when you " save " yourself or co-worker from emotional trauma.

Take Tree's advice, take the advice of others who have " been there, done that " ,

take the advice of books, take the advice of CIS instructors...take care of you

first! Do yourself something good for you. Whether through exercise (I like

punching the bag, Tree), relaxation, music, hobbies or what ever it may be, do

it for you first. Then you can do for others.

So whether you are considering getting into this profession or are new to this

profession or you have been around awhile, it's never too late to start taking

care of you. The rewards are terrific.

Behr
