hey did anyone see oprah yesterday?

she had her personal trainer on there and she brought on women who had used

his book and weight training exercises.

wow! really makes me want to start doing free weights! i think that i will

continue with taebo each day though for a while and still work on my eating

and water drinking and once i reach a few more immediate goals, then id like

to start doing the free weights a few times a week. i have no idea how to

start though.... are there some good videos or books that i can look into?

the book by oprah's trainer might be good but heck if i can remember his

name. do i have to have a bench and what sized weights should i use?

lol... lots of questions... maybe pat can help?

I do use some free weights, but mostly use the machines at the gym. I go to

the gym to life weights twice a week and workout for 45 minutes to an hour

each time. One day I do legs, shoulders and biceps. The next time I do

back, triceps and chest. The weight I use depends on the exercise I'm doing.

For free weights, I use 10 pound weights and do bicep curls (3 sets of 15).

There are other things you can do with free weights besides bicep curls, but

I'm not sure what they're called, and I'm not very good at explaining it in

written word. I'm sure there are lots of books and videos out there for

weight lifting. I've read that " Weight Lifting For Dummies " is a good place

to start. Check your local library. You might find lots of good stuff

there! As for cardio, when I first started out, I was doing it 5 times a

week, but now I strive for 3 to 4 times a week. I either do Tae Bo or go to

the gym and ride the bike or the elliptical trainer. Very rarely do I do

weights and cardio on the same day, but that's mostly due to time contraints.

i also assume that you alternate weights with cardio as you are on this

taebo list ;)

one of oprahs guests yesterday said that she does 30 mins weights and 30

mins cardio (every day i think as she had been doing it for like 8 years)

but i was thinking of trying 30 mins weights one day and 30 mins taebo the

next, and trying to find some instruction on how to do it (like a book or

video).

I am really behind in posts, so I don't know if

anyone already suggested this, but I recommend you get

the new FIRM tapes. One of the tapes, body sculpt is

all weight training using dumbbells (along with the

fanny lifter that is part of the set). Cardio sculpt

is an interval training tape using cardio segments and

weight training segments. Basically you use three

different weight dumbbells (you need to buy them

seperately) for the workouts. The instructor tells

you if you should use your light, medium, or heavy

weights for an exercise depending on the muscle you

are working and the exercise you are performing. For

the most part, I find their suggestions right on

target. I started with 3, 5, and 8 pound dumbbells.

Now I use 10 and 12 pound as well. I still have one

exercise I can only do with 3 pound dumbbells (at

first I couldn't do it with any weight) and I think I

do one with the 5 pound dumbbells. The third tape,

absculpt does not use any weights. It is like abs and

glutes, but just the ab part.

I feel these tapes would give you a great intro into

weight training with dumbbells. I also think the

fanny lifter is a good addition if that is one of you

trouble areas - like it is for me. The only drawback

is the expense. If I remember correctly, they are

$89.95 plus shipping. It is worth it in my opinion if

you can afford it.

Hi,

I just wanted to recommend checking out the workouts at

musclefitnesshers.com and oxygenmag.com In fact, if you can get a

copy of last month's Muscle & Fitness Hers (green cover) there is a

great periodization workout.

One interesting thing I've learned is that there is no such thing as

" toning " a muscle. You either build muscle or you don't and little 2-

lb weights aren't going to do it. It won't take very long before 5-lb

weights are too little to do any good. Building muscle doesn't

necessarily mean becoming brawny, most women don't have the genetic

capability for that. Building muscle is great because muscle is more

metabolically active than fat - it takes more calories just to

maintain it, so you can actually eat more (in a healthy way, of

course).

You can make your own home gym for hardly any $ at all, you don't

need to go to a health club or anything. You can look through the

want ads or at garage sales and get a bench & dumbbells pretty

cheaply. Alot of people buy the bench and use it as a clothes rack,

then sell it off for almost nothing! Weight training is a great

compliment to doing Tae Bo or any other kind of cardio!
