Guest guest
Sheila, don't worry so much about lo fat, worry about low carb. Even low fat tortillas are pretty high carb - unless you can find the low-carb kind (yes, there is such a thing!) You need to start reading labels. Also, for carb (and everything else) counts, try this website - it's all there: http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/cgi-bin/nut_search.pl It's the USDA website. Guest guest
Also re books...I find Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution by K. Bernstein much more informative than the ADA books. ADA publications don't mention anything at all about low carbing as a way to control diabetes; as a matter of fact, their publicatios are generally full of high-carb recipes. Guest guest
I dunno...for weight control you might want to keep it down to 2 eggs and 2 slices of bacon... skip the creamcheese... (Meni, can you really lose weight on that?) My dr. doesn't have me doing blood tests, yet. I am in the process of losing my insurance coverage. New coverage will be available to me, effective 1/1/01 At that time I will get something to test with. My dr. had told me that only " brittle diabetics " need to test, but I can " if I want to " . Only now am I getting the message that regular testing is important! Arrrrgggghhhh. I can't handle sausage, or chorizo, anymore. Upsets my tummy. Have you tried turkey bacon? I talked with a woman at the diabetes classes, who said it tastes like real bacon, but it is lc. I don't know about the sugar content. Do we have a limit on sugar intake? In modern times, we instead refer to them as " diabetics who haven't yet found the right treatment method. " They're up; they're down ... they're all over the place. They're clueless. This can usually be traced to poor prescribing, such as incorrect insulin types and timing; to lack of knowledge, especially about the importance of diet; and inadequate testing and recordkeeping. Guest guest
Sharon, I think I ordered a carb counter from the ADA. At least that is what I thought I was ordering. If it isn't one, I will go to the local book store and look for one. I am reading labels, now! Just threw out a new loaf of Ora Wheat, 7 grain bread. The label said it has 18 carbs per slice! I have another one, with only 13 grams for 2 slices. Sheila {:-D

Guest guest
Sheila, a pretty good book for counting carbs is the Complete Book of Food Counts by Corinne Netzer. It's in paperback. It's really thick and a huge percentage of stuff in it is information about " junk foods " which we really should avoid anyway. I still think the USDA website has the best carb info (URL given yesterday - if you need it again let me know). And it's free. Guest guest
I think it was on this list someone mentioned that she avoided dawn rise by having a few bite of a cheese slice, thereby fooling the body into thinking a meal was there. Well, I tried it this weekend...sorry, it didn't work that way for me. Took BG immediately on rising, had a few bites of a cheese slice, checked 45 minutes later and BG had risen anyway, from 95 to 126. Well, I guess it's just one of those YMMV things...Vicki

On the other hand, most cheeses are just fine. Vicki
