Testing is VERY important, especially in the beginning to see how YOU react to certain foods. Your Dr. should prescribe one for you so you can get it for free. If you do have to buy one, they are always it seems like, practically giving them away for free, only because we still need the strips and they can be quite expensive. That is why I think you should check with your Dr. to see what you can get for free first. Glad to see that you will soon be reading Bernstein's book. Guest guest
Sheila, You already have Rick Mendosa's web site for the glycemic index. He also has excellent reviews of glucometers. Many times, you can find special offers where they give you the glucometer when you buy the test strips. Among us there are probably several favorites. You can get them at most any pharmacy. Wal-Mart generally has pretty good prices on meters and test strips. Teri Another question......... Hi, everyone. In the two weeks I have been reading all of your posts, I have come to the conclusion, that I really need to start testing my bs. Can you tell me where I can buy a testing machine? Also, which one would you recommend? I saw one advertised, somewhere, that allows you to test places other than your finger tip. I have a problem with my left hand, as the result of carpal tunnel syndrome. I had surgery two years ago, and have never regained feeling in my left thumb, index finger, or middle finger. So, in effect, I only have use of my ring and little finger on that hand. I was told I should not test in the fingers without feeling. Has anyone any info about this testing machine, that allows a test in the arm, or elsewhere? In the two weeks I have been reading all of your posts, I > have come to the conclusion, that I really need to start testing my bs. > Can you tell me where I can buy a testing machine? Yes, Sheila, definitely you should! Glad you came to the right decision :-) Vaculance is the " finger sticker " that allows you to stick other places, and folks say there's no pain. Some of the following websites might have a special going on a blood glucose meter, as it's the test strips that are expensive. I have a Lifescan OneTouch, which works fine, but there are newer ones that don't require as much blood - some just a drop. There should be links on the website for this list to different meter manufacturers, and Rick Mendosa does meter reviews. Check his website at www.mendosa.com. I buy my test strips at either http://www.diabeticpromotions.com/ or www.hocks.com I search both of these and see what's on special. I can usually get at least $10 off a box of 100 strips, and Hocks has free shipping, if I buy 2 boxes. They've been the best price lately. Most pharmacies, super markets and Walmart have meters, so you might go check those out and read the boxes. There is one I got for $9.00 called In Charge, which not only does your blood glucose, it also does a 2-3 week average, called fructosamine, which can be tricky to test, as the meter is so sensitive, but it gives me an idea of where my medium term bg average is. To: undisclosed-recipients:; Hello, A few months ago I mailed you a free blood glucose meter courtesy of Lifescan. I hope that it has been of use to you in helping to control and understand your diabetes. I am pleased to announce that I am now able to offer the same opportunity again. Lifescan has given me additional coupons for these free meters to those in need. Since you have already received a free meter, I thought that you might be willing to help spread the word about the offer. I ask that you tell just one person about the availability of the free meter so that others can be given the same opportunity as yourself. If you could please let just one person know, you would forever have my gratitude. Please help me tell people with diabetes about how easy it is to get a blood glucose meter that can truly help people better understand their diabetes. If you are willing to do so, please have them e-mail me or have them visit my recently completed website: www.mcgiboney.com. A request can be given by e-mail or on the website. I thank you in advance for your help. I hope the very best for you, Dana G. McGiboney, R.Ph. mcgiboney.com Simply send him your address and ask for a FastTake meter and he'll send it. I don't think results are as good filling out the form on the web site. I, and several friends have received them. > Also, which one would you recommend? Sounds to me that it would be the perfect place to test. Test the side of the fingers, not the tip or pads. Some use a vaculance ($25.), but it's really not that big a deal to test with your fingers. -- Dave -- Sunday, October 22, 2000 t2 8/98 Glucophage ICQ 10312009 «» DavOr's daily aphorism: Some People, like Flowers, Give Pleasure Just by Being. -- Visit my photo page @ http://www.dorcutt.homepage.com
Guest guest
Hi, Sheila...I read this after I posted a response to an earlier post of yours where I begged you to get a meter. Glad you decided to get one. I use Lifescan SureStep. It's the only meter I've ever used and I've been quite pleased with it. BTW, although I have no problems with sensation in my fingers, I test only on my third, four and fifth fingers of each hand. I alternate hands each week. I test up to ten times a day right now. I also find the lance holder with a dial adjustment for depth of poke less painful than some other lance devices. I set it at the lightest touch, which is 1. They cost about $13- $15 and are well worth it if you poke a lot as I do. I change the actual lance needle daily of course. Vicki In a message dated 00-10-21 23:54:39 EDT, you write: << Hi, everyone. Guest guest
Thanks, for this, too, Teri. I am a military widow, and have base privileges. Tomorrow is my day for a trip to the base. I will go into the hospital and ask what they have. Will also check the Base Exchange. I think I will be losing weight just from doing the footwork! Yesterday, I cleaned out a lot of high carb things, including TV dinners! Sent lots of frozen, Weight Watcher deserts home with the women who clean house for me every other week! They were happy~! Last night I felt hunger and a bit light headed. So, I opened a bag of walnuts. What a great surprise to find there is only 1 gr of carb in 1/4 C of walnuts! Had a tablespoon of peanut butter with it, and was satisfied. I am enjoying all of the discussion about nuts, on this list! I've added Macadamia nuts, to my grocery list for tomorrow! Guest guest
Thanks, Barb. More, good info. I appreciate it. Looks as if I have some comparison shopping to do! I placed an order with the Low Carb connoisseur, last week, for items all of you talk about. Thanks, too for the vaculance name. Sheila {:-D Rainbow Farm wrote: > > Hi, everyone.
