Hi Pam,

frequency of clearance is really determined by the copiousness/or not of secretions ... bit like trying to find out ‘how long is a piece of string’...! And also depends on what/how many/nature of pathogens residing in the lungs. How often does your friend get sick, with infx? If ‘lots’ to any/either of the above then daily or more is needed to keep free of infx. If not so much, then maybe every other day....

Exercise used to be enough for me in years past to keep airway clearance pretty good (loved dancing, long walks, bushwalking, gardening, still could wield a mattock and crow-bar til 7-8 yrs ago...) but in past decade health has declined lots, also now have lots of ‘squatters’ who ignore repeated eviction notices via IV abx (antibiotics) and in fact have invited others to join in! (probably while in hospital - hosp-acquired infx).

I was dx when 18 yrs old, bronch already widespread throughout all 5 lobes then, am now 57 and have been unable to work full time much of my life, also had complications eg cleft palate, couldn’t be repaired til 6 yrs old due to whooping cough/pneumonia/collapsed lung as baby, had 21+ surgeries by age 21 - not a terrific start in life! So it’s important not to assume others will have same ‘path’ necessarily.

Hope this is of some clarification...

Happy breathing J
