What surprises me most is that this hypothesis is being labeled as " new " .

Healthcare workers in the developing world have been talking about this

since the 80s when the AIDS epidemic first became a household word.

Given the shoestring budget and primitive conditions that these

healthcare workers faced when caring for indigenous peoples out in the

bush, the need to reuse syringes was just an unfortunate reality of

life. It was more important to get people vaccinated than to worry

about shared syringes.

In hindsight, these healthcare workers may seem foolhardy. Yet we must

remember that it was a different era, with different acceptable levels

of risk, even in the first world. After AIDS came on the scene,

protocols changed drastically everywhere.
