Oh ! What a fighter you are!! :)

The high bg's... over 400!! wow... doesn't that affect your eyes? Do you

have any neuropathy? I get blurry vision at bg's over 200 :( and have some

slight neuropathy. So the low carb diet is a godsend for me.

Since you don't want to lose weight right now, perhaps on the day before and

day of your chem you could do the low carb thing to counteract the rise it

gives you, and do the hi complex carbs on the other days?? Might be worth a

try :)

You say the cancer destroyed most of your pancreas? Do you still make

insulin on your own?

, with all your problems you will just have to try and see what works

for you. However, a carb is a carb is a carb. I have found that on a High

Protein, What some people might consider a high fat, low carb diet, I feel

better and my BG's are in better control. I also am not as hungry as on the

other diet. If you haven't yet read Dr. Bernstein's book on

Diabetes you should. While I follow Dr. Atkins diet, they are similar.

Meenie,

As Of the first of the year all Diet RC Cola packages which are distributed

to the bottlers contained Splenda instead of Aspartame. Check the dates on

the bottom of your cans they are probably outdated. This is something most

people don't realize. Aspartame sweetened drinks go out of date really

quickly and the product deteriates. Splenda is much more stable. Call your

local distributor and ask them. I now have our local wall mart getting it

in. It has no aftertaste. A little sweeter than coke but then so is RC

sweeter than coke.

Dear Ann,

Thanks for the book tip - Has Dr. Bernstein written more than one? What's the

name of the book? I do have Dr. Ornish's book and find that one helpful.

You are right - I know I have to find my own way - because some very strange

things have happened since my surgery - I can digest foods i never could

before and have developed new allergies as well. And sometimes pasta will

bother BGs and other times not - depends on when during the day I eat

particular foods and my activity levels.

THis sounds good to me, Bill!! I think this is where my doctor is heading -

he has already increased my dosage - I take two injections per day - and is

waiting for some BG results from me to see how much more I need to have -

right now I am on Humalin N - he wants me to go to Regular Insulin - 70/30 -

I trust the team of doctors I have implicitly - they saved my life!! The only

complaint I have is the way they govern my diet right now. One baby step at a

time, I guess.

finally his cancer went into remission. The last two years there has not

been any signs of a reoccurrence either. >>

As far as eliminating all fat from your diet -- your dietician was right. I

was really trying to cut my fat intake, and got down to consuming in the

single digits for fat grams per day. The result for me was intestinal

trouble. I wound up severely constipated. All I am saying here is be

careful! Your body does need some fat to function properly!

Oh Pat :) You did get yourself a treat! I LOVE splenda :)

Isn't it a delight? It tastes just like sugar and you can cook with it. I

was absolutely thrilled when I got mine about 3 weeks ago, I make cheesecake

with it mmmmmmm

Hi Everyone,

I am relatively new to this list. My husband has Type 2 Diabetes and I've

been lurking and reading many of the posts with great interest. I'm

looking to be as supportive and helpful as I can be (to a very stubborn man).

Anyway, I seem to have missed a good portion of the discussion regarding

Splenda. Can someone please tell me what this is, where you get it, what

it's made of, etc? My husband claims to get severe headaches and memory

loss from NutraSweet and products made with the same ingredient (sorry, but

I can't think of what that stuff is called at the moment). The reason I

say claims to is because he claims that many other things also give him

headaches (I think I top that list) and he also blames old age (he's 52)

for his memory loss.

Thanks,

Shei

Hi Sue and others:

I just looked at my packages of Splenda. Both the packets and the

granules show zero calories per serving and under total carbs list less

than one gram. There are four calories in a gram or carbs but, I am

pretty sure I read that if there are less than five calories in a

serving they are allowed to list it as calorie free. Hope this clears

up the confusion.

Shei:

I bought both types of Splenda from their web page. They are not

available in stores yet, but are in some products now like Ocean Spray

" Lifestyles " cranberry drink and Log Cabin sugar free syrup. Both of

those products taste like they are made with sugar. I haven't made

anything with the granulated version so far but plan on trying some

baking over the three day weekend this weekend. I made " sugar free " hot

cocoa mix with unsweetened cocoa, powdered milk and splenda using the

recipe from the SweetOne package insert and it tastes just like real

cocoa. Much better then the Swiss Miss Diet cocoa that I have been

drinking. I will let everyone know how the baking turns out.

Tell your husband to see his medical provider's diatician and get an

" Exchange Diet. " I have been following one for several weeks now and

except for measuring portions the variety of food is good and I fill

up with things like salads and green, non starchy veggies. I have lost

five pounds over the last three weeks on this diet. I lost 15 pounds in

the three months before so I am down 20 pounds so far and plan on losing

around 30 more before getting to my 165 pounds like I should be.

My blood glucose readings have been excellent since I went on this diet

also. I don't take any medication but the readings are averaging 94.

Hi Erwin,

Now I wish I paid more attention in health class in high school! I

remember them talking about grams and all that stuff. Thanks for the quick

refresher course.

I'm working on convincing my husband to try Splenda. He asked about the

calories (as if he's trying to watch his weight do something other than

increase!). I just feel that Splenda is better than putting all kinds of

chemicals into his body (he currently uses Sweet & Low).

Thanks,

Shei
