Guest guest
Hi All, I have noticed a lot of posts here asking if car accidents can cause Chiari......Maybe I can help.......First off, Chiari is not caused by an accident it is genetic......But during normal daily living your body works around it and compensates for it and one of the things that it does is build scar tissue around the base of the brain and spine....This allows " normal " activities and it is also the reason that Chiari does not show up on most conventional ex rays......When you have a serious accident and your head and spine are jarred, it essentially rips the protective tissue that your body has put around the area. This causes the Chiari to become more visible and also " free floating " so to speak. Once the protective tissue is gone then your body has the symptoms of Chiari to deal with and a big part of Chiari is the mobility of the brain and spine.....The protective tissue kept the spine and brain from moving so it did not aggravate the area causing the effects of Chiari to flare up...... I hope this is helpful to all..... HUGS.......PEACE......
