What risk is there with volcanic ash and asthma? (I'm thinking Mike might be able to answer this!)

A volcano erupted last night in Iceland, and there is a cloud of volcanic ash currently moving down through northern Europe. It hasn't reached where I am yet (in the centre of England), but all of Scotland's airports are shut, and almost all flights have been grounded, so it's obviously quite bad.

The BBC website has a map showing where the ash is, and at the moment, it's only over the north of Scotland (and including where I used to live), but it is predicted to move down the country, though they are not sure how far and how much it will dissipate as it moves down.
