What do you think of when you hear the word independence? For many parents of children who have a disability, the word is both charged with promise and uncertainty. But most of all, parents wish for their children to have the skills and supports they need to be agents of their own lives — to be free to make things happen for themselves with assistance from others only as needed. In order to achieve this goal, a child, regardless of age, should be taught to think and believe in themselves. Becoming an independent/interdependent adult does not happen by accident; it must be taught. THIS IS AN OPPORTUNITY YOU DON’T WANT TO MISS! During this interactive session, participants will explore research based methods that foster independence and build on a person’s abilities. You will leave inspired knowing that through person centered thinking and collaboration in teaching independence/interdependence you can improve the quality of life for a person who has a disability.
