Hi

3 or 4 days to review?????????????? That's absurd!!!!!! I also have fatty

infiltation of liver. I have diabetes and it seems from some reading that

diabetes, cholesterol, liver are all kind of connected. My doc prescribed

lipitor to lower cholesterol which in turm would improve the fat content of

liver, i guess that is what he means. Anyway, have been on lipitor for

about a week, and today I just went " batty " . So I stopped lipitor. Oh

dear, this is all so confusing!

Judy:

The itching was so bad before I found out I had AIH. I would stand at the

door frame and rub back and forth on my back to itch it. I still have some

itching but not like I did before.

Lynn,

Thanks for caring. Decided to stop it after doctor hours. I dont know what

to tell him anyway. Do I tell him it makes me feel like I am going " batty " .

I read up on it today and that is not one of the side effects. Lipitor

is contraindicated in liver disease. But maybe it is not the med, maybe I am

just " batty " ! smiley face

What you doing up at this hour? It is 3:50 am here on east coast usa

Hi Judy, you are always allowed to vent, and please don't appologize for the

length of your posts! That was a very well written and informative one. Yes

please, if you are not satisfied with what this Dr. does check around and ask

people etc and find another one.

I was lucky when my new Dr. listened and started taking tests, it was like only

a

month for my diagnosis, and that was because we were waiting for all the tests

coming back and they got side tracked with a blood test that was done wrong and

they had to start over. The way it seems to me is by the time you have all

these

symptoms enough to see a Dr. you have already had this stuff for a while, so you

don't want to wait too long fiddling around with an incompetent Dr. It amazes

me

how Drs. will stand there and act like you don't know what your symptoms are, I

just don't get it!

Please let us know how it turns out, and I am praying they do if fast! Lynn aih

My appointment at Mayo they decided to just sit back and watch for a while.

I have slightly elevated cholesterol but they told me no meds-they said meds

like Lipitor and Lescol which I had been on are too risky with liver disease.

They asked me if I wanted to follow up at Mayo in 6 months and of course I

said no-I live in Indiana so my local yocal will do it!

Hi , is it wise to just quit a med? I hope you called Dr. first. I know

some meds are not to be stopped abruptly. Hope it is okay I hopped right in on

that, wouldn't want you to get hurt. Lynn aih

What are you doing up at this hour? It is 1:45 am here. Just can't sleep,

sometimes I get that way, if it isn't one thing it is another. One time the Dr.

put me on prednisone mixed with something else for asthma, and it did make me

batty and I called the Dr. and he told me to go off immediately. So of course I

did. So different pills do different things, why not just call and ask the

nurse. sometimes they have reasons for what they do, even tho, I am not too

" up " on most Drs. now days. You are welcome, I think everyone on this list does

care, and makes me feel good just knowing that. Before I wondered if anyone in

this world did care, as I was the only one I knew of with this stuff and no one

to talk too. I wish know one had this stuff, but since they do, I appreciate

the fact I can reand and talk and care for people too. Nitey, I think it is

time we go off to the sack! Lynn

Judy,

If you are at all unsatisfied with the results or comments from your

current doctor - Go get another.

Your peace of mind and being at ease with the doctor you deal with is of

the utmost importance. It has a lot to do with positive attitudes. Having

an acceptable doctor is the first move. Best of luck.

zjm,

That is what took me doc also. After bx showed no cirrhosis, he told me to

go to dermatologist. Told him I had been there and done that. derm did two

skin biopsies and found nothing. Still not convinced I dont have some form

of liver disease.

Judy,

Yes, the diagnosis waiting period is difficult. especially when you are

reading about all the possibilities and you don't feel good. Please keep us

posted on your results. If you don't get satisfaction with this doc, do move

on. Time is important when dealing with this disease.

Best Wishes, Roxanne

I think most of you know I don't post a whole lot because I have been feeling so

well. (But I DO read everything ... grin.) Unfortunately, I think the " feeling

well " has come to a screeching halt.

I had a teeny, tiny skin tag removed from my arm on Tues. It just took one

little snip and then the Dr. cauterized it. Well, I should say he TRIED to

cauterize it. It was bleeding so profusely, he couldn't. After many gauze

sponges and much pressure, he finally got the cauterization done, slapped

another piece of gauze on it with a band-aid and sent me on my way. I bled thru

the gauze before I got home, which took 10 minutes. I put more gauze on and

hubby applied a LOT of pressure. I should have gone back to the Dr. right then

but didn't. (Stupid me!) The cauterization came off and I had a little hole in

my arm.

I left the dressing on all night and all the next day, until about 26 hours

after I had the procedure done. My daughter was here so I had her pull the

bandage off. It immediately started pouring bright red blood. I called the Dr.

and he had me go back in so he could look at it. He said he had never in his

life seen anything like it. So, he cauterized it again, thru the pouring blood,

and we FINALLY got it to stop.

He decided to do lab work to check liver functions and clotting time. Now

comes the interesting part ... got the lab work back today and my SGOT is 45 ...

normal is 15 - 37. The SGPT is 134 ... normal is 20 - 65. My WBC's are

slightly elevated ... 12.5 with a normal of 4.3 - 11.0 and my platelets are a

little low ... 7.5 with a normal of 8.0 - 13.0. So, I had to go back in for

more bloodwork, specifically Hep A, B & C panels, iron something-or-other (he's

not thinking iron deficiency but a problem with the iron doing what it's

supposed to) and a serum copper screening.

I haven't been exposed to Hepatitis as far as I know, I don't drink and I don't

take excessive amounts of aspirin/ibuprofen/Motrin. So, does anyone have any

ideas? I asked him if it could be Lyme related and he really has no clue but my

thought is that it's not. I've had Lyme for 9 yrs. and never had a bleeding

problem before. I haven't been feeling sick ... a little achey in the shoulder

and back, but nothing that would get my attention more than the normal aches and

pains.

If anyone has a clue what this could be or if anyone wants to express an

opinion, I sure would appreciate it. The labs won't be back until Mon., of

course, so I'll be kind of nervous all weekend.

Thanks for your help.

Gee, Ann ... you've got me wondering now. Last March I had a melanoma

mole removed from the back of my left calf. Same problem ... she couldn't get

it to stop bleeding. When I went back to have it checked and the wrapping was

removed, instant bleeding again. I've never been a bleeder. I haven't been

diagnosed with Lyme yet because I haven't found an LLMD yet, but I know that

I have Lyme. I am not a drinker, either, nor have I been exposed to hepatitis

that I'm aware of. Maybe it really IS the Lyme??

Hi

Sorry you have to go through this on top of Lyme. I don't know much about liver

function or blood clotting problems except what you probably know but didn't

mention - antibiotics or any long term medication can cause elevated liver

function. I wonder what, if anything, you've been taking?

I just got blood results today and my SGOT was 4 points above normal (different

range than yours). My doctor said that it wasn't a problem, but that it should

be watched. I didn't have the other liver test you mentioned - SGPT. I've been

on IV Rocephin for several weeks.

I wish I knew more. I just did a little search on Pub Med for Lyme, borrelia and

clotting and didn't come up w/ anything relevant.

Hope you're able to distract yourself over the weekend. Let us know what

happens.

& Ann, perhaps you are taking meds which contain aspirin,

naproxyn or ketoprophin? Motrin, Advil, Aleve, etc. also some

anti-inflamatories contain aspirin as do pain meds. Check out each label

with your pharamacist just to be on the safe side. Even a baby aspirin

thins the blood. I have Bb, babs & ehrlic and I have to TAKE an

anti-coagulant. Lovey

There are some little known bleeding disorders that occur- esp. in females.

Most of them are listed on the web-sites as hemophilia. they are different

disorders- but bleeding disorders. Not necessarily related to Lyme.

Next time you talk with your doctor can you get him to give you references about

the infectious disease that might cause the Transaminitis? The references may

be useful for some of us later. Thanks so much!

[ ] Liver problems

From: " " <jeand@...>

I reported a few months ago that my liver enzymes were elevated and I was

undergoing different lab tests. Well, the enzymes stayed elevated so my family

practice doc referred me to a gastroenterologist and I saw him today.

He's not entirely sure what's wrong but he thinks it's Transaminitis, which is

basically fat deposits in the liver. I told the doc that since the rest of me

is fat then my liver might just as well be too. :-) He assured me that even

" skinny mini " people get this. He did yet *more* lab work today, checking for

an RNA something or other ... something to do with Hep C, and some other stuff

and I have to have an ultrasound of the liver this Fri. but he's pretty sure all

of those tests will be just fine.

My father was an alcoholic and the doc said it's altogether possible I

inherited this Transaminitis from him. (Thank you very much dad.) It can stay

dormant forever or rear it's ugly head whenever it wants to. I asked him if it

was connected to the Lyme and he said he has been researching Lyme lately and it

seems that an infectious disease can also cause the Transaminitis. Soooo ...

who knows???

If the lab work and ultrasound come back okay, he will consider me to have a

" chronic liver problem " and do lab work every six months to make sure the

enzymes are staying in the range where they're at now and not going any higher.

If they should go higher then he said he would do a needle biopsy but that is

not in the foreseeable future ... thank goodness.

I mentioned a few months ago that I would let y'all know what was happening

.... so that's it. If anything out of the ordinary shows up I'll write again but

I'm sure all will be well.

Hope all of you in the northeast are warm and safe from the storm.

Hi

A Gastroenterologist who knows about Lyme disease.....what a find. And in

Texas too. I am so glad you found him, and updated us about your latest medical

visit. I am sure you have helped someone else on this list who is suffering

from elevated Liver enzymes. I do hope that you don't need further treatment for

this new disease, and that your ultasound and further tests come out OK. Please

continue to keep us posted,

Much love and prayers,

I have had liver pain on and off for almost five years. No definite

diagnosis, and I haven't really pursued one, since my liver enzymes are

within the normal range, though on the high side of normal. I had a liver

scan when this all started and it was OK, so I've been taking medications

without worrying about harming my liver further. The past six months the

pain has been worse than ever, so I took a six week holiday from all

medications. That didn't help, so I started taking milk thistle almost a

month ago, and it has helped tremendously with the pain.

There is a GREAT web site on liver problems, and it deals with fatty liver

and toxic liver too. The site is Dr. Cabot (MD), she is in Australia. The

site is very reader friendly, and as far as I can tell from several visits

there, she is not selling anything, just giving out information. Though the

title of the web page mentions weight control, it is really about liver and

health, not focused on weight loss gimmicks.

Hope this helps someone.

Barb ... I have no pain whatsoever. My enzymes are high ... not " off the

charts " high, but pretty high above the normal range.

Thanks for the site info on Dr. Cabot's articles ... very interesting and

you were right ... very easy to read. However, for anyone else wanting to

read them, the URL you stated doesn't work. Just go to

www.positivehealth.com and then to Articles, then to Nutrition and then look

for Dr. Cabot's articles. There are two by her about liver

problems/functions/cleansing.

Thanks for the info!!

Hi and group:

How does a person go about finding out if he/she has a liver problem.. I

recently picked up a book on herbal remedies, with the main motivation of

finding some kind of help for my skin. It seems that my face is constantly

breaking out and I can't seem to find anything to help with this problem. I

was surprised to find that many herbalists will immediately tell you to take

different things to help with your liver function. Then when i copied out

the new supplement list iwas drawn to the segment that put in there

about the liver and ways to help improve liver function. I was also

surprised that something was said regarding poor liver function that could

eventually trigger graves disease. So are there tests available to find out

if there is a problem with the liver and if there are , what kind of doctor

do you go to for that?

I am also curious as to what kind of doctor to go to , to find out about

estrogen/testosterone levels, are such tests available? And what type of

doctor administers these types of tests? I also am considering having the

tests dones that show what levels of nutrients are lacking in my body, also

wondering what type of doctor administers these tests? If this is all

answered in the archives let me know, and i will just go there and do a

search, Thank you,

PS I just scheduled my first acupuncture consultation, and also found out

that my insurance covers it, will let you know if i find out anything new.

Hi, I think a gynecologist would do an estrogen/testosterone test and with

free access to our gynecologists through our regular med insurance, he/she

should be able to do all the tests you need at once. Debbie

Hi(name unknown)

I have over the last 4 years (since I developed a huge gaul stone)

have had dull aching in my liver.

I only had a blood test done last week for liver function, I have

not received the results yet. My normal doctor ordered the test along

with my other tests.

Dear ,

From my limited experience with herbal medicine (two years) I have found

a lot of references also to liver problems being the root cause of alot of

other problems.

There are liver enzymes you can have done to check liver function. The

only problem I am discovering with medicine is that the lab values do not

indicate problems until they are quite serious.

Herbal medicine works to heal the body in it's early stages of disease

and I know of three people with serious liver problems who used milk thistle

and found their liver enzymes return to normal and found the Dr.s amazed and

confused. " This isn't supposed to happen, " is their usual response.

My mom's Dr. is one exception. She uses herbs and medicine. She said

" every woman in America should be on milk thistle. " Her reasoning is

probably based on the fact that women don't tolerate the " chemical " laden

world we live in as wel as men. If a man and woman start drinking heavy,

the woman will develop cirrhosis much sooner. Our hormone balance is also

affected by chemicals much sooner as well.

The estrogen, progesterone tests that MD's do are supposed to be testing

for what has already been used and is on the way to the liver, it's a

reflection of what your progesterone level was a year ago. Saliva tests are

supposed to be much more accurate. Here is a web site to purchase a kit.

I don't have answers to the rest of your questions.

Have a great day,

Le Ann
