Ron in Dallas > Hello It is quite unfortunate that doctor's seldom explain that the Lidoderm patch is not a narcotic, and the Fentanyl (Duragesic) patch is a very powerful narcotic. The Lidoderm (Lidocaine, Zilocaine etc.) is only a numbing agent, that is essentially the same thing the dentist injects into your mouth, and therefore it can be cut without any danger. It numbs the area where you put it. If you cut the Fentanyl patch you risk releasing too much of the narcotic and I doubt if it will stick to the skin like it needs to. The Fentanyl patch is a time released very powerful narcotic that is time released and absorbed through the skin to slowly give a constant dose for 48-72 hours. There are so many " patches " out these days from hypertension control to birth control, so no wonder it gets to be a bit confusing.
