Dear Bill,

You've come to the right place if you want advice and support.

With your statement, " I'm scared " . I think this is where you'll want to

stay.

I will say that with Bill we are back to 123 members. I'm so happy

that all of you have decided to keep this a support list.

Bill, we were all scared. Your diagnosis does not have to be a death

knell, only a change of life style that will help you as well as your

family.

Ask any question, we'll try to give you the answers. Diabetes

is not a one-remedy-fits-all disease. You have to test, change diet,

retest, exercise, and test again until you find what works for you.

Please feel free to write any and all questions, even if they've been

answered dozens of times before we'll do it again, because we care.

I was diagnosed 3 months ago. I am less scared now than I was then - but

keep in mind - we are grieving. This is a " death " of our " health " and

living without concern for all of our actions all of the time.

We have to go through Dr. Kubla-Ross' stages of " death " . If I remember

correctly, the anger comes next.

Excuse me... I was just put on Insulin less than a month ago... and I can

tell you that I feel like my health has been re-born. The pills were not

doing it. Now I feel like I am living again.

I don't think of Diabetes as " Death of Health " at all... I think of it as a

Challenge that I must continue to strive to meet... something that I must

accept and move on. After all, the creator does not give us anything that

we can not handle.

I put it in quotes because it is figurative. I am glad you don't feel any

grief, but I can tell you that I do, as do most of the people I talk to do

who have been diagnosed with a disease (any disease).

No, we are not given anything we can not handle, but that does not mean we

do not go through psychological processes along the way. We are just human.

Dr. Kubla-Ross' stages are fear, denial, anger, bargaining and acceptance

(not necessarily in that order). I think if we ask the list you will find

that a lot of us have gone through these in various ways. You might even

find that you have.

This was not in any way meant as a personal affront towards anybody - and no

one should take it as such. We just need to be aware of our emotional

state, and accept it as OK.

Let me reiterate the intent of my original message:

Its all right to be scared, Bill. You are not alone.

It is scarey, isn't it? But you have lots of friends here.

Try to just take one thing at a time, step by step you will get better if

you determine to take control of this.

Job 1 is to learn to take your own bg( blood glucose )

Did you doctor recommend you get a meter and learn to do this?

What precipitated your diagnosis? (just curious <G>)

I found out in the emergency room... yikes.

I would be happy if I could say the same. I am trying insulin, but am

insulin resistant, and apart from heavy heart problems (which can be

an allergy against insulin) my BGs go up the more insulin I inject.

Nevertheless, I don't feel diabetes as a " death penalty " , although in

my case I nearly have to forsake anything with hydrocarbos ... and

that was what I liked most.
