Guest guest
We have had a deer that runs around our city for the past few years that has an arrow in its back. The wound has seemed to heal around the arrow and the deer doesn't seem to be adversely affected by the arrow as it has been running around the city for quite awhile. Still, we get calls on this all the time. People want us to come out and tranquilize the deer and take tbe arrow out or just take the deer away. I try to explain to them that a) it nearly impossible to get someone out the tranquilize the deer that this deer has been like this for several years and doesn't seem to be bothered by it c) that the deer is not going to run out into traffic because it has been distracted. Nevertheless, people get indignant when we don't do something about it. Like a previous reply, we have quite a few transplanted city folks that just don't understand country life. Another animal story that occurred before I started working for the department. We had a college student that called in about a oppossum that had been struck by a car and was lying in the street. She wanted us to come and take the animal to a vet so that it could be fixed up. Now, most of you know, for a call like this most of us would go and put the animal out of its misery humanely and explain to the complainant that there really isn't anything we can do. The veteran officer with an attitude problem that was sent didn't quite see it that way. He was rather annoyed that he was being assigned to such a stupid call. When he arrived, he called that he was " Code 9 " (meaning he had arrived) and, without unkeying the mike, the next thing that was heard was the sound of the cruiser rapidly accelerating and something going under the tires and the words " Code 8, Service " (meaning activity was completed and service was rendered). Unfortunately for him, the complainant was standing by the oppossum and was not amused. She called to complain and the officer bought a day off. It was not completely undeserved. One other stupid call, this one from the mental department. We had one of our frequent fliers call in the other day and complain because the sun was shining in her window. She was rather annoyed because it wasn't shining in anyone else's window and this just didn't happen in the town she came from. Sometimes you just have to wonder.
