Do you think the stress from the weather changes might be affecting the

sugar levels rather than just the weather? I am prone to sinus headaches

when the weather changes. Last week with our big snowfall I missed exercise

at the Center and had a headache and a yowling cat following me around as

well. Think I mentioned that instead of the exercise VCR I intended to play,

I played an old 'Virtual Catnip' VCR for the cat instead. It worked so well,

I had to play it twice for her. This morning she pestered me to play it

again. I've created a monster but at least a quiet one for awhile.

T'ai Chi exercise seems to lower my bg as well as relax me.

I always find my bg's going up in winter...i think it's cause i swim so much

in the summer, and in winter i don't cause it's too dang cold!! I try to do

something in winter that would exchange for the swimming, but it's hard,

being so cold and all. Walking is ok, but not nearly as energetic.

Shellé, Sounds like you are not too impaired. I think your choice of dinner was

not a wise one for a

diabetic. Any starch; wheat, cereal, pasta turns directly to blood sugar, and

192 is rather high.

sounds like you recovered nicely. Perhaps you merely need to reduce the starches

in your diet. Our

objective is at least to stay under 126 as an average sugar, I think avoiding

the big peaks is the

first logical step, Regards, sam

Sure it's possible.

After all, you sleep for about 8 hours. Your body does eventually use up

that glucose. Apparently you don't suffer from the dreaded Dawn Syndrome :)

If you at at 7 and your bg's were still that high at bed time I would look

at what you are eating. Pasta always sent my bg's through the roof and they

stayed up a long time like that.

I have found eating low carb took care of that problem. Now that I follow

Atkins my bg's run 79 - 115 or so...

I love low carb! :)

thing is, to understand what is happening and don't let it happen too often

and when it does cooontroool is the answer.

With all due respect, Sam, pasta is not necessarily an " unwise choice " for a

diabetic. I eat pasta regularly, and as long as I stick to a proper portion,

it does not cause me any large peaks. Remember, with this disease, YMMV is

the keyword. We diabetics are like snowflakes, each of us is different.

The peak may have been caused by something she ate earlier in the day, or

even the day before. I have discovered that if I eat something I shouldn't,

or binge, that the high does not manifest itself in me for nearly 24 hours.

, since I am diet controlled, it would not work for me. when you use

insulin you must match the

meal in size and timing with insulin, but any excess calories you either burn

off or wear.

I cannot see the attraction of a tasteless concentration of sugars, compared to

the many other

choices we have. It is cheap and in every packaged meal, suitable ones for

diabetics are few and far

between.

Hi :

I am on an 1800 calorie diet provided to me by Kaiser, my HMO. It

calls for one ounce of protien for breakfast, two for lunch and three

for dinner. Also calls for three carbohydrate servings at each meal

and one for a bedtime snack, three servings of fruit per day, one at

each meal and two servings of milk. I try to eat all of the above

every day and add lots of salads and green, non-starchy vegitables. I

have been on this diet since March. I am also walking every day,

sometimes twice per day along with working part time. I have lost 45

pounds so far, am now off blood pressure medication, off cholesterol

medication and have my blood sugar under control. Last month my Hba1c

was 5.3. I think that you should follow the instructions of your

diatitian and, only if you don't start losing weight should you reduce

your intake of foods. Remember, to be healthy, your body needs certain

nutrients.

Dear List Members,

I am happy to see this list now has 193 members. It's very nice to

know that we can share and know more about this disease than the Family

I was just wondering if anyone on the list is on Avandia list I am???

B, suggestion.

Demand Feeding for Type 2 Diabetes

I wanted to keep my sugars even, and found meals gave me highs and lows. Rather

than experience

this, I decided to use carbos through my waking time on an as needed basis. I

found that when I got

my portions of wheat low enough, there was little to eat. I gave up all wheat

products. I use fruit

in small amounts, like half an orange, or half a dish of fruit. I found the

fiber and pectin helped

regularity. I had a salad with some meat and cheese at noon, instead of

dressing. I have a dinner

with steamed vegetable, meat and potato, or half a yam. I can now reach 105 and

hour after dinner.

My last glycated hemoglobin was 5.3%. My morning sugars run 95. I am on a no

added fat regimen,

losing weight when I don't have a bit of chocolate or nuts. I found by not

stressing my system with

loads of food, my system has begun to store some insulin, and some sugar to help

control. I have

added a small amount of active bacillus yogurt with my fruit, and potato. It

has reduced gas and

smell. It provides a source of digestible calcium.

Breakfast an orange. Mid morning half a small dish of fruit, noon salad, 1:30 pm

the other 1/2 dish

of fruit.

3pm half dish, 5 dinner as above, for the evening 3 more fruit and yogurt

servings.

I expect this is a little severe, once you have the idea of small feedings as

needed do our own

thing.

I can hardly believe the amount and type of food some eat. Try these for ideas

Need information -- new to this. My diet is 1400 calories and for

breakfast I am allowed 2 carbs, 1 fruit, 1 meat and 1 fat. Dietitian said

the way meals are planned is for keeping bs level. What if I take away

fruit from this breakfast meal? Will that make sugar lower or do I need to

eat everything on my plan? Friend told me I should eat everything and I

will lose weight and it will be ok. I am to try to control with diet and

exercise, no meds as of present. I need to lose about 60 pounds -- dr.

said I was becoming insulin resistant and he thinks weight loss and this

diet will be what I need.

Any thoughts out there? I just love this list and have learned a lot so

far. Thanks for any help.

Hi ,

The key is experiment. But you have to do so in a controlled way in order

to glean any meaningful information from it.

First - how long have you been following the plan the dietician gave you? I

would say try it for a month. Check your blood sugars frequently and see

how they are affected by what you are eating. (ie: take blood sugar, then

have your breakfast. check again at 1 hr, and again at 2 hr - yes thats a

lot of sticks but once you find a consistant level with these foods you

won't need to do is so often) Do this around different meals and different

foods.

Next decide if you are happy with your foods and can stick with it. If you

are, and if it is controlling your bg's well and you are losing weight then

go with that.

I lost weight on a low fat plan but couldn't stick with it. I had terrible

cravings all the time and it was a constant fight. I finally researched

other ways and decided to try Atkins which has controlled my bgs perfectly

AND made me into a sane person again, lol.

We are all different and this is very much a ymmv type thing (Your Mileage

May Differ). There are several good options available, go with what works

for YOU.
