If you have to travel to where they live, I would stay in a hotel and meet them outside their home. Even at their house, I suspect that just not smoking a day or so before is still going to leave you exposed to a problem. I have heard from realtors who sell houses smokers have lived in, that they have to repaint using one of those shellac-based sealers on the walls first to keep the smoke damage from bleeding through. It's in the upholstery, etc. Smoking is reportedly the most difficult addiction to break. I hope they don't have kids exposed to that second hand smoke, it sounds like there is a lot of it.
