Guest guest
Mine is recovered enough to do regular school, but still on the nerdy side. Anyhow, he is at TSTC in Waco. When I was there I was shocked to see so many nerds and well, high-functioning Asperger types. He has made lots of friends. I recommend educating him on saying no to alcohol and drugs though, if he lives on campus as mine does. He found friends that don't do that stuff. Paying for college is actually quite easy, and I have always been upset at the media portraying that only rich can go. The more poor the better. The federal government gives grants to pay for the "poor's" tuition for up to two years. You can fill out a FAFSA.gov form and bring it to any college to see if you qualify. Plus, you can get college loans. I borrowed $25,000 and I only pay back $160. a month, and payments weren't due till after I graduated. Also, if your child is special needs or even recovered with some symptoms left, they can qualify for DARS (Department of Rehabilitative Assistance) or something like that. They will pay for even kids of higher income individuals who have spent their school years getting special educational services. Anyhow, mine still tests as having ADD, so he was able to still qualify. A psychologist will evaluate him at DARS' (http://www.dars.state.tx.us/drs/offices/OfficeLocator.aspx) expense. There is also something called "WorkforTexas" or something like that, which gives free training for labor-tech jobs like plumbers. A guy at the Texas Workforce commission told me about it, but my kid wants to learn about electronics which is what TSTC is all about. Not a lot of papers to do, but a lot of hands-on stuff to do, which is my kids' weak point. He can't do reports well, but can do tests well. He really needs to do hands-on in order for him to be successful, so this college is perfect for him. A lot of community colleges also have Vo-Tech courses which are typically easier than traditional college. I guess it all depends upon your fellow's particular likes. If he ends up going to TSTC, my son will be glad to help him feel at home. I don't know much about JobCorp, but have heard a few tell me that a lot of "convicted criminals" get court-ordered to go there, or something like that. Probably there is good about it, just saying the little that I have heard, and that was 20 years ago. A lot could have changed since then. Love and prayers, Heidi N I am just writing to all to get your opinions on Job Corp for my 19 yr old higher functioning son.
