Wellllllll....we insisted because his grandfather is a direct match, and we prefer the direct donor route also. He was able to give one unit as we only had two weeks notice from the day we scheduled the surgery til the surgery day........and guess what....They DID use it for . He lost more than usual so the dr. said he was was glad that we had the forsight to insist. On any surgery that has several days advanced notice, we will have at least one to three units donated to as direct doner. I have a best friend and a cousin that are exact matches...Thank God!!! He said he NEVER had to use any. It would wear me down and cause unnesessary "paper work" if anyone else donated. Silly me, I was afraid to make someone who was operating on my BRAIN mad by insisting...........I used 2 units.....still need to go back to be tested for hep. or hiv.......small chance of that (I wonder if it is a smaller chance that I needed blood in the first place or...that I even have ACM) go figure....hang tough...forewarned is forearmed...debi d Leary wrote: >She also had the blood patch. May I respectfully point out that Danny did need a blood transfusion during his decompression surgery due to the "extensive veins at the foramen magnum". Our nsg suggested we set up a blood bank prior to surgery as a precautionary measure, which we did. More often than not a transfusion is not necessary, however in our case, it was. Suzanne L. Guest guest Posted April 12, 1999 Report Share Posted April 12, 1999 Marty, The chances now days are very remote of contacting any kind of disease from donated blood but it is still your right to donate your own blood. I donate my own blood every time I have had surgery in the last 15 years (10 of them) because I receive blood transfusions before the blood was tested. I have never felt tired afterwards besides they only take two units out one day and if there is anymore than that needs you go back the following day or two later. For a Doctor to refuse you to donate your own blood is violating your rights. That is unethical and against the creed that they swear to. I had a doctor tell me that my own blood would not be allowed because I was on meds for seizures. Well, hello if its my blood going back into my body then why does it matter if there is seizure meds in it? A medical degree was necessary to come up with that observation!!! DUH!!!! Contact your local red cross and find out with their direct donor department the steps you need to take to do this and what their procedure is. Medicaid happened to pay for sending this blood for , so I'm not sure how your insurance will work.
