Guest guest
Well that was one big ah ha moment for me. My son has always been pale, we see Dr. and I just mentioned this to him the other day. My son also has PANDAS. His thyroid levels have always been normal but in the back of my mind I wonder...he had nearly every symptom on that list. How is Dr. treating your thyroid issue? I can't help but wonder if this is a piece we may be missing. Trina Tristan, 16, is under the care of Dr. and Dr. now in Austin. His blood work showed high strep titers and low thyroid levels. The high strep titers were expected because he has had symptoms of PANDAS from chronic strep infections for 18 months. Looking into the low thyroid levels I find disturbing information, and came across this article that might be interesting to others whose child is on the spectrum. Are there others whose child has low thyroid levels? http://raphaelkellmanmd.com/health-issues-we-treat/the-thyroid-autism-connection/ C. Guest guest
thank you for sharing this. i have long suspected that i have undiagnosed hypothyroid and i think i am going to take this article to my doc and ask for more thorough testing. i was especially interested in the accumulation of lead part, my youngest son had his lead tested and it was around 3, which i know isn't high, but it isn't zero either. i wonder if this could be contributing....laura We’re all a little weird. Guest guest
My son was diagnosed hypothyroid when he was 4. His TSH levels were about 3.5. While not " lab abnormal " , the thyroid doctor I was seeing said between that and his symptoms ( he was always cold - even outside in the Texas summer- and constipated) it warranted treatment. Treating the thyroid with Armour Thyroid helped him be more focused and less irritable. When he was younger, we could always tell when it was time to adjust his dose because he would just get cranky! Thyroid issues are very common in autism. > > Tristan, 16, is under the care of Dr. and Dr. now in Austin. His blood work showed high strep titers and low thyroid levels. Guest guest
You say your son's thyroid tests have been normal, and the fact that Tristan's was noticeably low on these standard tests, really concerns me. In the article he said he uses a different test as he believes these regular tests are unreliable, yet Tristan's showed up on it. April, my daughter called the office as soon as she got the results in the mail and they called in a prescription for the thyroid but I don't know what it is. Tristan has many of the symptoms also. His hands are usually cold, and we have been very concerned that he is so skinny. He was like that as a toddler and young child, then when he was about 13 he seemed to gain weight, not over weight, but since then he looks too skinny. > > > ** > > > > > > ** > > Tristan, 16, is under the care of Dr. and Dr. now in > > Austin.
