My mother (who is 80) has just been diagnosed.Did you go through pulmonary rehab?My mother has not yet done this - is waiting on further information from her doctor. Do you participate in a pf support group? Not yetSmoker?No Grew up in a smoke filled environment? No - but lived i London in the early smog days & worked in office environments where photocopy chemical fumes were rife - which have also been implicated in cancer etc.husband/wife? Not a smoker - & my mother is now a widowChildren?My mother's children don't smoke, & we've left home. My 9 year old son is unlikely to smoke - & those of my other relatives who did are all dead - usually of lung cancer - except the older ones who died of tuberculosis decades ago. What do you like to do in your spare time?I surf the net! Yes, for a short period then stopped because it was too difficult walking the distance from the parking lot through the halls and to the rehab center.Do you participate in a pf support group? Only this one on-line.Smoker? NO, never.Grew up in a smoke filled environment? Not really, but subjected to it at varius times earlier.husband/wife? Husband smoked briefly for several years and stopped about thirty years ago.Children? YES Phyllis 47, 42, Jimmy 41; all married and away from home; none every smoked.Pets? She started having symptoms in 2001 and started with oxygen about 2 years later. Did you go through pulmonary rehab? My mother did go through pulmonary rehab and continues to go to rehab about 3 days a week. Do you participate in a pf support group? My mother has two- Myself and my younger brother (26 years). My brother is married and lives in the Midwest and we live on the East coast.Pets? Yes, I have a Yorkie Poo named Gizmo and my mother and I both get a lot of enjoyment out of him and his antics. My brother also has a dog. We are all animal lovers. Favorite Movie? Well, I enjoy reading and I don't know that I have one favorite...over the summer I read the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants seris, which is geared toward teenagers, but the books are a really good read. These books reminded me of the power of friendship. I also like autobiographies and I recently read the autobiography of Assanta Shakur, which is powerful and encouraging. I also enjoy reading stories about animals. What do you like to do in your spare time? I'm a graduate student so I really like to relax! I also spend time with my family, friends, and dog. I'm an outdoor person when the weather is warm. I also enjoy trying to become a better salsa dancer when I have time and doing things with my church. I really didn't know about IPF until my dad was diagnosed. My family and I didn't even know what was happening. My dad had this chronic coughing and the doctors kept saying he had nothing. Until finally one doctor told us the name of the specialist that we needed to take my dad to. He was in the hospital for a little bit over a month and that really affected him emotionally. My brain aint getting enough oxygen, I don't think. Memory loss is really bad. On Oxygen?yes If on oxygen, how long?about six months or so. I was on oxygen before I found out about my disease. When I went on oxygen, I started to think that maybe I should have the lung biopsy they wanted me to have and I had refused up til that point. I should of had the biopsy in March of 05. How many liters? 2L Did you go through pulmonary rehab?no. It has never been mentioned to me and I really don't even know what that is. Do you participate in a pf face-to-face support group?There are no such groups around here. I asked my oxygen man if he knew of anyone with this disease in this area and he said he knew of one. The last time my oxygen man was here he gave me the name and phone number of the 65 yr. old man that has it. I haven't called him yet, but I plan on doing it soon.
